Inleiding.
De WINKEL werd gebouwd in 1909 naar ontwerp van W.G. Welsing. Het gebouw was één van de oudste kruidenierswinkels van De Gruyter, zoals die door heel Nederland in vele varianten werden gebouwd door architect Welsing. Het Jugendstilpand vormt een onderdeel van een ononderbroken gevelwand in de binnenstad. Het onderste deel van de winkelpui en het interieur daarachter zijn rond 1980 uitgebroken. Wel resteert een aantal monumentale tegeltableaus van de Fa. De Gruyter, qua thematiek gerelateerd aan de oorspronkelijke winkelfunctie.
Omschrijving.
Het drielaagse pand heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond en een plat dak. De gevels zijn opgetrokken uit witte verblendsteen met rode voegen en rode speklagen. Voorts is er veel gebruik gemaakt van zandsteen en graniet van een rode kleur. Aan weerskanten van de pui bevinden zich granieten pilasters. In de linker is de signatuur: "W.G. Welsing" aangebracht. De pilasters zijn gedecoreerd met bronzen koorden met knopen en als bekroning een leeuwenkop, waarvan de open muil is uitgewerkt als een krans met afhangende linten. Hierboven verheffen zich de twee etages, waarvan de zes schuifvensters per verdieping twee aan twee gekoppeld zijn door de geprofileerde zandstenen omlijsting. De vensters zijn voorzien van glas-in-lood. Per twee vensters is er een bewerkte borstwering en een getoogde bekroning, die het platte dak aan het oog onttrekt. De decoratie van borstwering en bogen is ontleend aan de Rococo. De twee smalle zich verjongende pinakels met cirkel-streepdecoratie tussen de ingezwenkte segmentbogen en de gebeeldhouwde vrouwenhoofden die zich hoog op de hoeken verheffen, vertonen de vormen van de Jugendstil.
Waardering.
Het winkelpand is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van de sociaal-eonomische ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de uitgroei van de grootschalige detailhandel met vele plaatselijke vestigingen en een eigen huisstijl; het is van belang als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van de winkel. Het heeft architectuurhistorisch belang vanwege de plaats in de geschiedenis van de Jugendstil bouwkunst en in het oeuvre van de architect en vanwege het bijzondere materiaalgebruik. Introduction.
The SHOP was built in 1909 according to a design by W.G. Welsing. The building was one of the oldest grocery shops of De Gruyter, as were built throughout the Netherlands in many variants by architect Welsing. The Art Nouveau building forms part of an uninterrupted facade wall in the city centre. The lower part of the shop front and the interior behind it were removed around 1980. Description.
The three-storey building has a rectangular ground plan and a flat roof. The facades are constructed of white facing brick with red joints and red brick-earth layers. Furthermore, extensive use has been made of sandstone and granite of a red colour. On either side of the storefront are granite pilasters. On the left is the signature: "W.G. Welsing". The pilasters are decorated with bronze cords with knots and as a crown a lion's head, the open mouth of which is worked out as a wreath with hanging ribbons. Above these rise the two storeys, of which the six sash windows per floor are coupled two by two by the profiled sandstone moulding. The windows are provided with leaded glass. For every two windows there is a worked parapet and an arched crown, which conceals the flat roof from view. The decoration of parapet and arches is derived from Rococo. The two narrow tapering pinnacles with circle-stripe decoration between the recessed segment arches and the sculptured female heads that rise high on the corners display the forms of Art Nouveau.
Valuation.
The shop building is of general interest. It has cultural-historical significance as an example of socio-economic development, in particular the growth of large-scale retail trade with many local branches and a distinctive house style; it is significant as an example of the typological development of the shop. It has architectural-historical significance because of its place in the history of Art Nouveau architecture and in the oeuvre of the architect and because of the distinctive use of materials.
