Inleiding

Introduction

The SHOP was built in 1924 in expressionist style, to designs by architect F.C. de Beer. The client for this toy shop was J.J. van Nunen-Boes. The business name, which was indicated in frosted glass lettering in the distinctive curved corner solution, was painted over around 1990 but is still recognisable.

The interior has been altered. The dwelling situated at the rear was incorporated into the warehouse. Around 1980 the entire ground floor storey was knocked out and renewed. Both basements have been filled in. The building forms the closure of an unbroken façade wall in the city centre and stands at the corner of the Alexanderstraat.

Description

The four-storey corner building has a rectangular ground plan, a rounded corner with tower-like corner solution and a flat roof. The façades are constructed of machine-made brickwork with concrete frame. They are articulated horizontally by parapets of yellow-grey gravel concrete with brown mottled brickwork above. Vertical articulation is provided by arched window strips and corners. The front façade has in the centre a strip with three windows one above the other, the parapets of these follow the rounding of the window. The lowest, which is painted grey, has cantilevers, the uppermost is flat and follows the cantilevered concrete cornice. On either side of the vertically oriented windows are horizontal four-part windows. These are tall, placed directly beneath the parapet of the next storey. All windows are fitted with leaded glass. In the zone above the first storey the text "Speelgoederen" is set in bronze ornamental lettering. In the rounded corner is the renewed entrance. Above this rises a curved leaded glass window running through all storeys. The name "J.J. van Nunen-Boes" remains recognisable despite the red overpaint. Behind this is the stairwell. This is out of use. Above the cantilevered cornice is a decorative band of masonry. This is fitted with blue and yellow glazed tiles and is crowned by a small three-part open turret of wrought ironwork on the corner. The right side façade has above the shop front, also broken out here, two series of vertical and horizontal leaded glass windows conforming to the front façade. The corner rounds, with some recessed vertical decorative masonry as on the left corner of the front façade. The corner is accentuated by a substantial built-up block with horizontal decorative bands. The rear façade of the building has on the right on each storey a four-light horizontal window; these are now partly filled in. Beside the windows again a narrow rounded corner with a small concrete ornamental block.

Valuation

The building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical significance as evidence of social-economic development, through the construction of large-scale shop buildings on the old streets of the city centre and is also of significance as an example of the typological development of department store building after 1900, in particular through the application of modern stylistic means and the effects of light in architecture. Because of this the building has innovative value. From an architectural-historical perspective it is of significance because of the very distinctive manner in which ornamental detail and material use are put to the service of retail and also as an example of the versatility of the architect. The building is valuable because of the relative integrity of its exterior, its ensemble value and in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the urban environment and as an example of such a corner solution is extremely rare.
