The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

The three WORKERS' DWELLINGS were built in the fourth quarter of the nineteenth century. The rear extension with kitchen was presumably added around 1900. Originally the block consisted of four dwellings. The rightmost one was replaced around 1950 by a much larger building. Initially the buildings had a shared rear courtyard, currently this is divided.

Description

The facades of the single-storey block of dwellings with rectangular floor plan are built up in red hand-formed brick with plastered plinth and straight tie anchors. On the gabled roof with the ridge parallel to the street lie black Old Dutch tiles. The facade has a window-door, window-door arrangement. The six-pane sash windows with shutters have a hardstone sill and are placed beneath a yellow brick relieving lintel. The panelled doors have a divided fanlight. The plastered frieze beneath the profiled wooden gutter moulding is provided with a division into panels. The left side facade is provided with a small window on the upper floor. The rear facade is screened from public view by a tall steel gate of recent date. The right side facade is built in. In the virtually wholly authentic interior is a front room with a door opening directly onto the street. The floor is laid with hardstone paving. After the back room follows the kitchen with scullery. The shared side wall is formed by four box beds situated one behind the other. Beneath the rear two box beds is a narrow cellar. Between the box beds is the staircase to the upper floor. The floor of the box beds consists of street bricks.

Valuation

The block of dwellings is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as an example of socio-economic development, namely the increasing need for workers' housing in the growing industrial city and is an example of the typological development of the terraced house. The group has architectural-historical value because of the simple detailing and the particular coherence between interior and exterior. The dwellings have ensemble value because of the manner of arrangement and provisions. The buildings are important because of the integrity of their interior and exterior and have gradually become extremely rare.
