Inleiding

Waardering

Introduction

The VILLA was built in 1921 for the manufacturer Frans van Dooren in Expressionistic style. The architect was J. van der Valk. The building is in use as an office.

Description

The two to three-storey building has a virtually rectangular ground plan and is constructed of machine-made brick. On the composite mansard roof lie red improved Dutch roof tiles. The frieze is laid in standing bond with cloister bond bricks framed by a narrow relief border of bronze-green ceramic.

Horizontal lines dominate the architecture of the building. The front façade has on the left one six-part composite window, on the right two of these windows. The fanlights of these windows with ladder glazing bars are, as elsewhere throughout this building, provided with Art Deco leaded glass. On the storey there are three-part windows corresponding with these. The entrance section is placed between them. The door is located in a portico. The steps and corner blocks are of granite. The portico is formed by two diagonally placed walls with narrow black bands that support a hexagonal wooden canopy. The panelled door is of varnished wood with decorative carving and leaded glass. Above the canopy a three-part leaded glass fanlight. The wrought-iron door handle is attached to the granite base of a three-sided brick bay window. Like the underside of the canopy, the far-projecting wooden overhang has a geometric decorative division accentuated by dark green and white paintwork. The mansard roof has a bent base and above the second bay from the left a small balcony with a five-part window-door unit. The corners of the balcony are provided with decorative wrought ironwork. Above this section the roof is carried higher with on the left a narrow chimney. Oval terracotta ridge ornaments stand on the ridge lines. The left side façade, which is relatively close to the neighbouring building, is executed flat with, adjoining the front façade, four small windows. Behind it follows the single-storey kitchen section with a flat roof, with a cross window. An even lower section under a flat roof contains a round-arch panelled door. The right side façade stands free on a street corner and has on the left a large five-sided bay window extending over three storeys. The top storey has small low windows beneath the roof with ridge ornament. After a following window bay a shallow three-sided decorative bay window extending over two storeys. The middle section is executed solid; above the roof this ends as a broad brick chimney. The rear façade was originally characterised by corner projections and a small three-sided decorative bay window to the right of the middle section. This middle section was infilled during a renovation around 1980 by a conservatory under a flat roof. The left projection has a composite eight-part window. Above it a yoke-shaped window. In the projecting mansard roof that crowns this section a ladder window. In the middle section the three-sided bay window with narrow slit windows containing leaded glass can be recognised over two storeys. This section transitions into a heavy corner chimney with decorative brickwork. To the left of this a roof dormer with between the two windows a section with cloister bond bricks. Above the conservatory a balcony with wooden decorative balustrade, balcony doors and side windows. In the projection on the right is the kitchen with a cross window and in the roof plane behind it a broad chimney with decorative brickwork.

In the draught vestibule, fitted with a door with leaded glass, there is a door to the front room on the left. All walls and ceilings of the public spaces are finished with white finely sanded decorative plasterwork, with broad bands of dark woodwork. The interior is organised around the centrally placed square stairwell. The solid balustrade, like all other woodwork, is executed in dark wood. Leaded glass is found not only in the external windows, but also as fanlights in the corridors. Almost all rooms retain their original corner cupboards. These are executed with glass panels and asymmetrical decorative glazing bars. A particularly fine room is the toilet on the ground floor, located behind the first room on the left. The space is T-shaped with bevelled corners. The floor has red-brown and white hexagonal tiles in a geometric pattern. The walls are fitted with brown matt tiles with gold-coloured relief borders. The fountain with shelf bracket also dates from the time of construction. In the vestibule leading to the kitchen and the kitchen itself there are yellow glazed tiles with geometric decorative pattern. On the first floor, to the left of centre, there is a safe with a nameplate of De Haas from Rotterdam. Due to its form and dark paintwork, the large cabinet is completely incorporated into the house. At the entrance, a double iron Art Deco corner bracket is set between brickwork.

In the large rear garden there is a pond with T-shaped plan centred on the axis, extending over two levels.
