Inleiding

Introduction

Former UMBRELLA FACTORY built in 1886 for Guillaume Gimbrère. The firm, which had a business in the Heuvelstraat, was established in 1853. The residence of the proprietor is the likewise protected Stationsstraat 25. Factory and residence lie on an L-shaped plot bordering both streets until the closure of the business in 1956. The roofed gateway is still the back entrance of the residence. After a fire in the early part of the century, the original mansard roof of the factory at the rear was raised and fitted with a flat roof at the current height. Now it is a residential and storage building.

Description

The rectangular factory lies on an L-shaped plot with the front facade on the plot boundary at the street. Three sides of the factory are detached. The eastern gable wall is pressed against the adjacent building. The front facade of the factory has two storeys with above it an attic storey covered by a flat roof with roof shield at the street furnished with grey cross tiles. At the rear three storeys.

The almost symmetrical front facade is nine bays wide. Each bay contains both on the ground floor and on the storey an arched wall opening with cast-iron rod windows with an I-profile as lintel. The window contains a thirty-six pane glazing with a reinforced central mullion and a hard stone drip moulding. In the middle bay a double front door and cast-iron fanlight. Far left in the facade a narrow roofed round-arch gateway. The arrangement of the rear facade corresponds for the lowest two storeys with that of the front facade. An exception is the middle bay, which contains on the storey a cast-iron round window with geometric glazing bars. The third storey has wooden windows with a T-shaped arrangement and a back-sloping fanlight. The masonry consists of hand-formed red brick laid in English bond. Decorative brickwork under the eaves and in the arch extrados above the windows. The west gable is blank. The rear courtyard is closed off on the west side by a mortared cheek wall.

The interior is largely authentic. In the factory wooden stairs with railing wrongs and cupshaped pieces. The floor structures consist of steel main and wooden secondary beams.

Valuation

The object is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as an example of the socio-economic development of industry in Tilburg and as an example of the typological development of factory high-rise construction in the late nineteenth century. Architecturally it is of importance because of the building type and the harmonious simplicity of the applied formal language. The building is important because of the integrity of its exterior and interior.
