Omschrijving

Description
Introduction The MONASTERY BUILDING of the monastery Our Lady of Koningsoord was built from 1933-'37 in sober Neo-Gothic style according to plans by architect J. van Dijk. The monastery was founded from Chimay for the Trappist sisters and was largely paid for by the Trappist monastery Koningshoeven, also situated in Berkel-Enschot.
Description The monastery consists of an approximately 100 metre long north-south oriented building, which from north to south comprises a guest lodge, a monastery chapel, adjoining the actual monastery building with cloister, refectory, scriptorium and other residential rooms. The monastery was not entirely built according to the original plan. That plan included, among other things, a large refectory on the southern side of the building. This was not realised.
The building complex is two-storeyed with a roof truss structure, has a P-shaped plan and is covered with gabled roofs and hipped roofs, fitted with asbestos slate. The brick building has a concrete foundation and is partly executed in concrete as regards construction. The sober facades are enlivened with concrete mouldings, or else a brick round-arch frieze. Where cross-vaults are applied above the corridors, this can be read on the outside of the building from the application of constructed corbels with artificial stone plinths. All windows of such corridors have a natural stone frame with tracery, consisting of two lancets and an oculus. In the front facade of the guest lodge is a substantial entrance risalit, with a division corresponding to the risalit of the rectory, behind which a tiled portal, likewise corridors with cross-vaults, to which are attached interview rooms. Both the front facade and the rear facade have on the ground floor and upper storey pointed-arch windows, all provided with forked tracery. The monastery chapel, which is cross-shaped in plan, has a single-aisle nave of four bays, a transept with in each transept arm an eastern chapel and a three-sided closed choir of one bay. The simple brick building has at the crossing an open bell-tower with a needle spire. In the western gable a soberly constructed entrance portal, above which a rose window. The chapel is vaulted with constructed four-part cross-ribbed vaults, separated by moulded concrete ribs. The white plastered walls are pierced by simple pointed-arch windows, in the choir provided with a frame with coupled lancets, crowned by an oculus. In the central part of the closing wall of the apse is a constructed niche, clearly visible on the outside of the church, with a fanlight, intended for a statue of Mary. The church is bounded on both sides in the same manner as at Koningshoeven by the vaulted cloister.
The chapter room, now refectory, consists of a sober and high single-aisle space, rectangular in plan, which is vaulted with four-part cross-ribbed vaults set on corbels and consoles. In the eastern gable a composite window with twice a coupled lancet plus oculus, above which a ten-lobed rose. In the side gables windows with frames as in the choir closure of the chapel, above which brick pointed gables.
The cloister walk, consisting of four arms, has a tiled floor, white plastered walls and four-part brick cross-ribbed vaults on consoles. On the southern side a small extension. In the cloister court a water basin.
The other buildings around the court are two-storeyed and have the same detailing as the guest lodge. They contain simply detailed residential rooms and monastery cells. On the southern wing a small roof lantern. In the western rear facade two entrance risalits.
Valuation The monastery building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical values as an expression of cultural and spiritual development, namely the establishment of new monastery foundations in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; it is of importance as an expression of the typological development of the contemplative women's monastery. It has architectural-historical importance as a late example of traditional application of Neo-Gothic forms for ecclesiastical buildings; it is of importance because of the ornamentation; it is of importance because of the special relationship between parts of the exterior and interior. It has ensemble values as part of a complex that is of importance because of the manner of subdivision and arrangement of the entire site. It is of importance because of the architectural integrity of the exterior and interior.
