Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Three-aisle cruciform CHURCH, built in traditional manner according to designs by H.W. Valk and C.W. van den Beld in 1929 with Expressionistic treatment of Romanesque and Gothic church building influences. Around 1998 the whole was converted into residential units.
Description
The brick church consists of a broad nave of six bays long with lower side aisles. At the front stands a robust rectangular tower. The long and wide transept arms are likewise three-aisle and comprise four bays. Above the crossing a round tower on square base. The choir is one bay deep and has a hexagonal termination. A lower extension surrounds it. The choir is flanked by two-storey rectangular extensions under a gabled roof. The roofs are covered with slate. The front facade is provided with a round-arched door in sandstone framing. This framing has a tall build-up in which a quatrefoil window is inserted. Above it in relief a representation of Saint Theresa. Above that, in the tower two very high, narrow stained-glass windows. In the upper edge of the tower squat triangular windows are inserted. Dials have been placed against the roof plane of the tower spire.
On either side of the front door are low protruding chapels under copper roofs. In the upper edge of the facades is a series of narrow round-arched windows. Adjacent to the chapels are round-arched doors in sandstone framings. The right door opens into the side aisle, on the left the door forms the entrance to an extension against which a lower square tower stands.
Against the right side facade a connecting element to the presbytery has been placed.
On the ground floor squat triangular windows have been placed, which are extended downwards and provided with wooden shop fronts with glass windows. In the clerestory smaller windows are located. On the lean-to roof of the side aisle buttresses are built.
The square crossing has a round cupola crown with keyhole windows and spire and is provided with sculptures at the corner.
The transepts are provided with broad triangular windows. In the top gable a large rose window with stained glass is placed. In line with the roof plane the transepts are provided with canopies at the front.
Choir and crossing have standing stained-glass windows, finished at the top with a trefoil. The interior is executed in fair-faced brickwork and in the nave provided with large parabolic arches, between which are brick herringbone vaults with wide span, which rise from segmental arches above the parabolic separating arches to the side aisles. Similar vaults also occur in the transept arms. The crossing transitions via a system of brick squinches into a round cupola. The choir has a brick calotte with keyhole windows above a series of parabolic arches supported on low columns, which separate the ambulatory of the altar space. The transept arms have twelve-lobed rose windows with twelve trefoil windows around them. In plan and elevation the building displays in its cruciform layout, the wide crossing arches, elevated crossing and the choir with apse calotte and columns the way in which the architect attempted through architectural forms to create a people's church. He wished to involve the faithful through spatial and lighting effects as well as possible in the eucharist and realized this also through the cruciform plan, his so-called 'Christocentric people's church'.
During the internal conversion and reorganization the furnishings were removed, with the exception of the mensa of the high altar. The spatial effect has been largely lost through the placement of concrete floors and built-in elements for kitchens and sanitation in the nave and transept, although large parts of the walls and vaults remained visible. The central cupola space of the transept and the apse of the choir have been kept free to full height and still give an impression of the spatial effect and detailing of the original interior.
Valuation
The church is of general importance due to architectural and cultural-historical values. The complex has cultural-historical value as an expression of the development of Catholicism in a Brabant industrial city. It is an example of the typological development of the people's church. The whole is of architectural-historical importance due to design, detailing and use of materials. It occupies an important place in the architect's oeuvre, as an early example of his ideal Christocentric cruciform church. The church has ensemble values as a dominant element in a small-scale residential district of the Interwar period. The church is important due to the external integrity.
