Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The Art Nouveau MILK SALON WITH TERRACE AND DIRECTOR'S RESIDENCE was built in 1913 according to a design by architect Jos Donders for the Coöperatieve Tilburgsche Melkinrichting en Zuivelfabriek. Following a renovation with restoration in 1994-1995, the building now functions as a restaurant.
Description
The two-storey building has an elongated floor plan. Together with the former director's residence, the whole forms an L-shape. On the hipped roofs with flat sections lie red tuile-du-Nord tiles. The front facade is constructed of cream-coloured facing brick with red mortar joints; the side and rear facades consist of brown machine-made brick. The front facade has various stone dressings and at the level of the under-, intermediate and upper sills a double row of blue-green brick as a speckled pattern. The front facade consists of a broad symmetrically arranged central section and beside it the gable with factory entrance. The wide projection is provided with a spout gable and is divided by pilasters and crowned by an openwork balustrade. The side sections have a panelled door with fanlight on the ground floor and a dormer window on the upper storey. Behind the balustrade is a roof dormer with a vaulted roof and small glazing bars. The ground floor of the central section projects forward but is visually connected to the sides by a glazed lean-to roof of the terrace. On the ground floor there are two broad shop windows. The balcony above has an iron balustrade with geometric Art Nouveau motifs. Next to the opening doors there are on either side two sash windows, all with leaded glass fanlights.
The stone dressings are provided with recessed decoration and moulded edges. Above this a tile tableau has been placed, with a yellow background and red lettering. On either side of the name "Coöperatieve Tilburgsche Melkinrichting en Zuivelfabriek" two heraldic shields. On these shields are depicted jugs, a cross with plough and the abbreviation C.T.M. Just above this tableau five small attic windows under adjacent stone dressings. The spout gable has a stepped stone frieze with a rounded coping. The former entrance has a segmental-arched gable, between pilasters with decorated stone corner blocks. On the ground floor are the completely closed wooden gate doors with panels and iron door grilles. Above this a stone plaque is set into the masonry: "This establishment was founded in 1914 by M.J. Haan, chairman, J.J. v.d. Hout..." (etc.). On the upper storey two dormer windows and under the gable two paired attic windows. The gable is finished with stone in the frieze and a rounded roofline with ball motif at the ends. The right side facade was exposed after demolition of the adjoining building and is entirely blank. On the left the building is built up against the former director's residence.
The rear facade is partly original, partly modified in style after the adjacent dairy factory was demolished in 1994. Four progressively projecting sections can be identified from left to right. Behind the factory gate is a rear gate and above it a balcony with iron railings and opening doors. Next to this a section with a segmental-arched window and on the upper storey a round-arched window. Then a section with a broad door arrangement and above it a composite broad window. Finally, the section which is built against the rear facade of the former director's residence. On the ground floor two windows and a door; the gabled roof is partly extended to a flat roof.
The wooden wall panelling, the wooden panelled doors, the tilework and the parquet flooring, after being restored, have largely returned to their original place in the restaurant. Partly these components have been reinstalled in other parts of the building.
The two- to three-storey director's residence has an elongated floor plan with a bend and is crowned by a corner tower. On the flattened hipped roof lie red tuile-du-Nord tiles. The front facade and the right side facade are constructed of cream-coloured facing brick with red mortar joints; the others of brown machine-made brick. On the left is a facade stone with the name of the architect, Jos Donders. The stone plinth runs up to the sills of the same material. The broad central window is flanked by two narrower ones with the same glazing bars. Like the other windows, the stone dressings are provided with recessed decoration and arched moulding. On the upper storey is a dormer window with on either side a sash window, the stone dressings of which abut each other. On the corner yet another sash window, also with a leaded glass fanlight with trefoil motif. At the level of the under-, intermediate and upper sills is a double row of blue-green brick as a speckled pattern. The roof section is terminated by an openwork brick balustrade. On the left a pilaster with a decorated stone corner block, on the right the tower chamber with a stepped window, double arched frieze and a four-sided tent roof with terracotta ball finial. The right side facade adjoins this with on the ground floor a narrow hopper window and on the right a renewed door arrangement. Above these windows is the continuous glazed canopy on iron rods of the terrace. On the upper storey far left and far right a sash window. The tower also here has a stepped window and adjoining the balustrade. A roof dormer with a segmental-arched roof and small glazing bars breaks through the roof plane. The left side facade has adjoining a blank section, then a long and a slightly shorter window on the upper storey. Next to this, in the centre a round-arched window and a circular window with leaded glass, where the staircase is located. The round-arched window displays a representation of, among other things, jugs, a cross and plough. Subsequently, again recessed, two broader windows one above the other. The rear facade of the building is here obscured from view by two small buildings which belonged to the factory; a two-storey one under a flat roof and a one-storey section under a gabled roof.
The terrace has a rectangular floor plan and is situated at a raised level, with a small stair as access. The terrazzo floor has been replaced by tiling. The terrace has a balustrade of brick and iron. On top of the granite plinth are bollards of light facing brick with red mortar joints and stone dressings with decorated cap. The iron railings between them have a simple geometric decoration.
To the right of the terrace is the gate with wrought-iron opening doors, which belonged to the factory entrance. The iron doors have a segmental-arched top which adjoins the gable of the entrance. The gate stands between high facing-brick bollards, with rounded sides, stone corner blocks and top decoration with circles, rectangles and stripes of the same material.
Valuation
The building is of general interest. It has cultural-historical importance as an example of socio-economic development, namely the strengthening of industry and hospitality on an older structure upgraded by park development and new construction, and is also important for the typological development of the dairy factory with milk salon. Architecturally, the building is important because of its style, ornamentation and place in the oeuvre of the architect. The building has ensemble value as part of a larger whole which is of national importance from a cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban-planning perspective. Finally, the building is important because of the integrity of its exterior and in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the urban fabric. As an example of a former milk salon it is relatively rare.
