Inleiding

Introduction

DOUBLE CHAPEL from 1890 in Neo-Gothic style designed by architect A.G. de Beer was built for the Poor Clare nuns. The building comprises a representative section as a public monastery chapel and a plain chapel for the sisters.

Description

The public chapel facing the street, consisting of four bays, has a cruciform plan with a gable tower and a choir with three-sided closure. The sister's chapel adjoining the rear, built against the choir closure, has three bays and a rectangular plan. The walls are constructed of machine-made brick and the gabled roofs are covered with slate in Maas-bond pattern. The chapel tower consists of four tiers and has a tapered eight-sided spire with cross and weathervane. The buttresses are laid diagonally and provided with ashlar plinths. In the first tier are double doors under a pointed arch with natural stone five-foil with stained glass. Above this is a tall pointed-arch window with brick pointed-arch tracery, followed by three pointed-arch lights linked by the transom. Finally follow the pointed-arch-shaped sound holes in a pointed-arch shaped relieving arch framed by decorative brickwork. Against the tower is a quarter-round staircase turret, provided with slit windows and a pyramidal roof with cresting. The corners of the chapel and the transept have two-part diagonal buttresses. Pointed-arch windows with tracery illuminate the space. The walls and vaults are plastered. The single-aisle nave and transept are furnished with moulded cross ribs with round keystones, springing from a console with leaf motif. The sister's chapel has three arched windows set high in the wall of the external wall. Access is possible via a door in the corridor, an adjacent room behind and via a door leading through a hall to the parish chapel. This double door has decorative glazing bars in the upper panels and a geometrical glazing pattern in the semicircular fanlight. Along the walls with wooden wainscoting, choir stalls with misericords are arranged. The walls and the ceiling with arched form are plastered. In the rear wall, on the left, a semicircular niche is left where the simple Neo-Gothic altar with the "I.H.S." sign stands. This space corresponds to the altar space on the side of the parish chapel.

Valuation

The former double chapel is of general interest. The building has cultural-historical significance as an example of a spiritual development, namely the establishment of new branches of old orders in urban centres; it is also significant as an example of the typological development of the double chapel in the late nineteenth century. The property has architectural-historical significance because of the extremely plain style and detailing, characteristic of the Poor Clare nuns and also because of its place in the architect's oeuvre. The building is valuable because of the coherence between exterior and interior. The property has special significance because of its location, connected with the development of the city. The building is valuable because of the exceptional integrity of both interior and exterior.
