Inleiding

Omschrijving

Introduction

INDUSTRIAL BUILDING on the Piushaven, built in 1935 as a grain and flour trade for the company A.C. van Loon and Zn. Coöperatieve Meelfabriek in an Expressionistic architectural style.

Description

The building has a composite building mass, entirely executed in yellow brick on a red brick plinth. Most striking is the three-storey high block-shaped building mass on the Piushaven, provided on the left corner with a tower-like superstructure. To the right of the building is a lower building mass with rounded corner towards the side street (Lanciersstraat). The buildings are provided with flat roofs. The three-storey building mass (number 1.02-1.04) has in the left side façade on the ground floor two high-placed horizontal windows. Above this on the upper storey a door and a rectangular window have been installed. All provided with new window frames. The left corner of the (front) façade is provided with a mortared pilaster with projecting concrete plates.

The tower element projects from the upper storey and has six vertically stacked square windows with nine panes. The flat roof is provided with a substantial overhang. Directly beneath are four-pane small windows installed. The façade is decorated with a border, executed in blue tiles. The right part of the front façade is nearly blind. On the ground floor a wide renewed door is placed between slightly projecting mortared rectangular surfaces. The door has a large segmental fanlight, provided with fan-shaped glazing bars. Above this narrow light slits have been installed over the entire height of the building, these are placed between artificial stone blocks and filled with green-coloured glass.

To the right of this stands the two-storey building mass. On the ground floor three wide windows are installed in it. Directly above is a concrete band. Above this band a series of small square four-pane windows are placed which also run around the corner. Between them blue tiles are installed at the top. Above this border a continuous, slightly projecting canopy. The façade above this contains some high-placed narrow vertical light slits on far projecting triangular artificial stone corbels. The light slits consist of green glass building blocks. Many window frames have been renewed (among others to the right of the segmental door on the ground floor). The rear façade is provided with a one-storey new block-shaped extension with various rectangular windows. The rounded corner forms the connection with a one-storey intermediate section with entrance of no. 1. Adjoining this is a building mass placed on the corner towards Lanciersstraat. In this large windows with small glazing bar divisions and a large section of blind façade. The slightly projecting corner section is again rounded. On the curved corner windows are installed with the same design as the windows in the front façade. The same applies to the side façade. Above the windows a continuous concrete band has been installed. A division between the building masses is formed by a slightly projecting and higher mortared section. Set back on the side street a large segmental passage has been made. In the passage there was originally a gate.

The interior is largely modernised. Behind the segmental door a renewed stairwell has been installed. The building is partially cellared.

Valuation

The building is of general importance. It is of cultural-historical importance as an expression of socio-economic development, namely the creation of industrial buildings near a harbour with connection to the canal system, and is also of importance for the typological development of buildings for the grain trade. It has architectural-historical value because of material use and the relatively exceptional and rich detailing and design for a grain trade building. It is of importance as an example of the architect's early work. It has industrial-archaeological value. In particular the exterior has been well preserved and in connection with the harbour is a characteristic and rare example of a trading building from the Interwar period.
