The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

In the far north-west corner of the site sewage water is taken in and collected in the WATER CELLAR, which is situated along the side facade of the PUMPING STATION and together with it forms a single entity. It dates from 1937 and bears characteristics of the New Building movement. It still fulfils its original function. The sand trap connected with this building has already been removed. From here the sewage water is pumped to the modern sand trap.

Description

The water cellar is situated along the western facade of the pumping station and consists of two large, six metre deep concrete tanks, which are situated below ground level and are connected to each other. The tanks are open from above and have a brick rim which protrudes above ground level. An iron balustrade is placed on the rim. Above the partition wall of the tanks a walkway has been installed, fitted with a balustrade. The sewage water is taken in via a pipe situated below ground level. The water cellar is connected to the pump cellar of the pumping station.

The pumping station has a rectangular floor plan and is one storey high under a flat roof. The facades are constructed of red machine-made brickwork. The roof line is accentuated by roof tiles. The facades at the south-east corner of the building merge into the chimney (for ventilation of the pump cellar), which protrudes slightly above the roof line. The teak double entrance door is situated in the south facade, to the right of centre. To the left of the door are two fixed brass four-pane windows. In the eastern long facade four fixed brass twenty-pane windows with opening lights have been installed, in the western long facade four fixed brass ten-pane windows and in the north-west facade four connected brass twenty-pane windows with opening lights. One far-projecting copper water collection tray for roof water is attached to the east facade, and two to the north facade.

In the interior five load-bearing cast-iron columns are visible on both long sides between the window sections which support both the concrete beams of the ceiling and the transport rails of the overhead crane. The walls below the windows are tiled with yellow tiles. The floor is laid with red flagstones and the plinths consist of black tiles, rounded at the corners. A cast-iron staircase with steel balustrade leads to the pump cellar. On the ground floor four original electric motors manufactured by Begemann of Helmond in 1936 are installed (riveted and nailed fast). Around the motors grilles are set into the floor. In the pump cellar there are (riveted and nailed fast) six original horizontal centrifugal pumps. The clinker-paved path to the pumping station is planted on both sides with a single row of lime trees. This planting continues along the north side of the original access road, in the direction of the access gate, and moreover along the south side of the path to the screening structure.

Valuation

The object is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as an expression of a pioneering phase in sewage water treatment. Because the scale and design are adapted to the function it has a high illustrative value. It has architectural-historical value as an expression of the New Building movement, the coherence between exterior and interior and because of the coherence with the planting. Exterior and interior have been preserved intact. It is rare because it is one of the few remaining examples of the type of sewage water pumping station with water cellar. The coherence with the other proposed objects makes the process understandable.
