Omschrijving

Introduction

Frater house from 1894, built in a sober building style to the design of architect H. van den Abeelen. The design is influenced by Neo-Renaissance. The building has been in residential use since 1998.

Description

Two-storey brick main mass on a rectangular floor plan under a mansard roof covered with slate. The front facade has seven bays and is provided with a hard stone plinth. The facade is arranged symmetrically. The central risalit is provided with a peaked gable. In the risalit is located a double wooden panelled door. On the ground floor and upper storey are broad windows with glazing bars under segmental arches. The arch fields are filled with brickwork in fantasy pattern. At the height of the window sill a black brick string course is applied. In the roof plane stand twice three dormers with a boarded peaked gable, a slate roof and a finial. Below the guttering is a brick dentil course applied. Above the door a foundation stone with inscription: "FIRST STONE LAID/ BY/ A WILLEMS RECTOR/ 18 - 94". The right side facade is provided on the ground floor with composite windows. On the upper storey is in the middle a vertical sash window, provided with glazing bars. In the peaked gable are two sash windows applied. The left side facade has in the middle a narrow door with fanlight under segmental arch, in the arch field brick mosaic. Above it a vertical window with glazing bars. Behind it on the ground floor two broad windows with glazing bars. Both on the ground floor and on the upper storey is a narrow window placed in a deep recess. In the peaked gable two windows as in the right side facade. At the rear the house has a one-storey extension under flat roof with overhang. The building mass has a composite form and is partly of later date; this part forms a connection with the chapel. The windows in the rear facade have the same design as those in the front facade. To the left at the rear stands an older extension under right-angled gabled roof with a weathervane. In the plastered rear facade is a four-pane window with shutter.

Valuation

The former frater house is of general importance as part of an ensemble with cultural-historical values. The whole is of cultural-historical significance as an expression of social and spiritual development, namely care for education and charity by Catholic congregations and is also of importance for the typological development of the small-scale congregational monastery. It is a reflection of the important role played by the clergy at the beginning of this century, particularly in the south of the Netherlands. The complex has architectural-historical values because of its detailing and use of materials and because of its place in the work of the architect. It has been preserved in good condition.
