Inleiding.

Introduction.

The Neo-baroque church is attached to and built-in with the Capuchin monastery at number 165. The style harks back to that of the eighteenth century. The church was built in 1880-1882 to the design of Brother Valenus van Deurne and has a cruciform layout which is rare for this order. Various images of the Sacred Heart of Mary in the building and against the front façade point to her as the patroness of the church.

Description.

The single-aisle cruciform church has a nave of six bays, a straight-closed choir and transept each of one bay. The church is built of machine-made red brick with sand-stone-yellow brick speckled courses and corner blocks and decorative mouldings. Slates in Meuse-covering lie on the gabled roofs. The plinth and the rusticated and profiled round-arch frame of the centrally placed main entrance are of hard stone. Above the double panel doors a semi-circular panel with radial divisions. Above this a round-arch niche with crowned image of Mary with Child. On either side a round-arch niche. Above the image a large arched twelve-light window with stained glass. At the top an oculus and as a crowning a cross. The nave has articulation with buttresses between the four round-arch windows with forked tracery; the transept with round-arch window and the choir are unarticulated. To the left of the main entrance is a single-storey extension under a flat roof with herringbone-arch frieze and two arched panel doors. In this space was the mission museum. The right side façade is blank and connects to the monastery. The openwork roof turret has four pediment gables and an octagonal needle spire with slates in Meuse-covering. The windows on the courtyard side are blocked up. The rear façade of the chapel is straight with a pediment gable and connects in a straight line to the rear façade of the monastery. On both the ground floor and the upper storey there are two arched windows with small glazing bars, respectively from the priests' chapel and the library. A smaller format window is located below the pediment gable, which is closed off by a cross.

The walls are plastered and painted white. The cross-vault of the chapel is of stucco and rests on arched ribs with coffers, rising from pilasters for the articulation of the walls. The round-arch windows have a profiled frame. The dark woodwork of the church is entirely executed in Neo-baroque style.

The main entrance is provided with an elaborate wooden frame with columns. In a round-arch two arms rise up towards a cross in a laurel wreath. Above that the image of the Crucified Christ, with Mary and John. The wooden benches are provided with white enamelled numbers. Along the walls on both sides stand three confessionals with semi-circular plan with small columns. In the pediments above each door different scenes from the lives of saints. Above that Stations of the Cross from 1882, oil paint on canvas in wooden frame with cross. To the left of the main entrance, in place of windows, paintings on canvas. These were painted in 1907 by T. Köhl on the occasion of the silver jubilee of the monastery. They are depictions of: "Miracle of the Holy Sacrament by St. Anthony", "St. Anthony friend of God and mankind". Furthermore: "St. Francis founder of three orders", "St. Francis sends his followers as missionaries" and "St. Francis blesses his native city as he dies". To the right of the entrance is the polychrome life-size Pietà image with text: "Mother of Sorrows pray for us". In the left transept a large St. Joseph altar and on the right an altar of the Sacred Heart of Mary. With this an image of St. Anthony and one of St. Francis. In the right transept a small window is left open at the top. Behind this is the room, from where the mass could be followed.

The main altar is the focal point of the church and forms an inseparable part of the Neo-baroque architecture. It was made in 1887 by the brothers Adrianus der Kinderen and Urbald Jonkergouw. On either side is a round-arch opening with an image of respectively Peter and Paul, through which the priests' chapel is visible. The openings can be closed with shutters. Above the tabernacle a painting from 1888 of Christ in heaven, in conversation with Mary and St. Francis kneeling at their feet. It is a copy of Murillo's painting, "The Portiuncula Indulgence". In a round-arch niche above this painting a polychrome image of Mary. On the other side of the choir doors is the priests' chapel. This narrower and lower space is likewise provided with cross-vaults. The walls have a high wooden dado and there stand polychrome images of St. Joseph and Mary and a dark wooden image of John with the eagle. Above the priests' chapel is the library, with an arched door. The hinged windows with hinged fanlights are provided with brass handles. The bookcases and interior are entirely renewed.

The roof truss structure consists of a collar-tie roof with rafters and with crosswise beams and therein rising stuccoed barrel vault.
