Inleiding

Introduction

The RESIDENTIAL BUILDING in a rural location with stylistic influences from the Amsterdam School was built in the nineteen-twenties. The dwelling has among other things been used as an artist's studio. Visual artist G.H.H. Carbo enlarged the dwelling in 1972 for this purpose with an extension on the east side, which is of secondary importance for national monument protection. The internal layout has been altered several times and was changed again during the recent renovation in the nineteen-nineties and is therefore considered of secondary importance.

The house is situated near the junction of the Nieuweweg onto the canal dyke along the Tienhovenskanaal. The property, situated low in relation to the road, is located to the north of the road and canal in open polder land.

Description

The north-south oriented detached residential building consists of one storey. The property is constructed from a nearly T-shaped floor plan in wood and horizontal, black-stained, tar-coated sections on a grey-rendered brick plinth. The composite roof is covered with thatch and finished with ridged roof tiles. It consists of a tall gabled roof placed perpendicular to the front facade (south side), curved at the top to create a parabolic form, with hipped caps positioned perpendicular on either side. Against this tall gabled roof, a lower building volume with a gabled roof has been added in the longitudinal direction. The rectangular windows contain, whitewashed single and multiple frames with glazing-bar divided fixed windows and casement windows. The three-bay symmetrical front facade (south side) contains in the centre a curved gable-top with beneath it a slightly projecting two-sided bay window. The end gable is characterized by an elongated window in the form of an inverted T, containing fixed, glazing-bar divided windows. Above the bay window the thatch is drawn through from the roof planes of the hipped caps with a gentle curve. This strip of thatch is covered with tiles at the height of the end gable. The two-part window in the bay window is fitted with wooden shutters. The windows are nine-paned. The two-part windows on the corners run through into the side facades and contain six-paned windows.

The west facade of the southern main volume contains on the left a narrow three-paned window with to its right the entrance with a two-part wooden door and a mortared step. To the right is a narrower three-paned window, which is coupled with two six-paned windows. In the north-western corner of the T-form is a small building volume under a flat roof. In the west facade of the northern volume is one window. The east facade of the main volume contains on the far left a window with two coupled six-paned windows. In the north-eastern corner of the T-shaped building a later extension with a flat roof has been realized, which is of secondary importance for national monument protection. The north facade contains a window recently extended across almost the full facade height. The wooden cornice rests on wooden brackets.

The interior is of secondary importance for national monument protection, because the original layout and detailing are not intact.

Valuation

The house is of architectural-historical value as an example of a reasonably well-preserved residential building from the nineteen-twenties in characteristic materials such as wood and thatch, somewhat influenced by Gooise farmhouse construction and because of its landscape setting.
