Cluster 20. Ruineuze resten van bomvrij Wachthuis (gebouw B).
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 20. Ruinous remains of bomb-proof guardhouse (building B).
NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE
Introduction
RUINOUS REMAINS OF BOMB-PROOF GUARDHOUSE (BUILDING B), which came into being in the second building phase of the fort but was largely destroyed by demolition during the Second World War. A bomb-proof guardhouse is a defensible shelter with facilities for personnel and their equipment that can withstand impacts from projectiles of a predefined calibre. With the increase in the range of artillery, the force of projectile impacts and the explosive power of (brisant) grenades it became increasingly difficult to resist attacks. Thickening of masonry, application of shock-absorbing masonry systems (amongst other things by means of arches), shallow slope angles and curved or sharply pointed forms, use of concrete – and later reinforced concrete – in increasingly heavy construction, was one of the ways to keep fortified works capable of withstanding increasing attack force. Moreover, the application of earth coverings proved to be a good means of absorbing or damping energy. This is the reason why many masonry or concrete works were provided with an earth layer or front protection of sand or earth. Depending on the period of construction – and thus the expected impact force of projectiles – the term 'bomb-proof buildings' was used when they were considered capable of withstanding a previously defined number of impacts from heavy calibre weapons. The bomb-proof guardhouse at the Fort at Tienhoven was built in 1880, but it was demolished by the German occupier during the Second World War and has since been in a ruinous condition and now serves as a biotope for flora and fauna.
Description
RUINOUS REMAINS OF BOMB-PROOF GUARDHOUSE (BUILDING B), located on the northwest side (gorge side) of the earthwork of the fort. The guardhouse was erected around 1880 and consists of a brick building with three sides covered in earth with, on the right, a slightly set-back section. In the facade near the moat and the former bridge, on both left and right a window. The left window is an original six-pane sash window with a fanlight, the right window has a simplified layout.
Valuation
The RUINOUS REMAINS OF BOMB-PROOF GUARDHOUSE (BUILDING B) of the Fort at Tienhoven are of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building techniques, which are based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th century).
This concerns a component from circa 1880, namely an example of a brick bomb-proof guardhouse.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The component is poorly preserved because the building is in a ruinous technical condition; the building nevertheless represents particular (historical) values because it suffered damage deliberately inflicted by the German occupier during the Second World War.
