Cluster 20. Houten loods.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 20. Wooden shed.

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

WOODEN SHED located outside the fort island, but within the earthworks later added to the throat side of the Fort near Tienhoven, non-bomb-proof storage of materiel or functional space. At various locations within and outside fort grounds over the course of decades wooden, stone and metal ('tin') sheds have been constructed to serve as (provisional or permanent) storage space, storage, shelter for people or materiel, hospital, fire brigade, horse stable, etc. A large part of these sheds has since deteriorated, been demolished or relocated, but others still exist in situ. Sometimes these are particularly simple structures of small size, but there are also more complex and larger examples. The shed at the Fort near Tienhoven is relatively small. The location outside the fort grounds suggests it was a storage for non-military objects.

Description

Green-painted WOODEN SHED on the southwest side of the fort, which was probably built around 1895. The building lies diagonally behind the fort warden's dwelling, with the roof ridge parallel to it. The shed measures approximately 7.00 x 5.00 metres and is covered by a gabled roof laid with dampened hollow tiles and provided with simple, white-painted, wooden barge boards. The facades are constructed from puttied parts. The eastern gable contains an entrance with double doors and to the right of this a window opening; the northern long facade contains only an entrance with single door. At attic level in both gables windows, both divided into four panes by glazing bars. The interior was not visited.

Valuation

The WOODEN SHED at the Fort near Tienhoven is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of wooden building related to military-strategic engineering, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthened offensive means (19th century).

This concerns a component dating presumably from the end of the 19th century, namely a wooden storage facility of around 1895.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative because it is an example of an authentic wooden storage facility arranged near a service dwelling of a defence work.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because main form and architectural detailing have largely remained intact.
