Inleiding
TOEGANGSHEK, als onderdeel van de buitenplaats Nijenrode.
De buitenplaats heeft zijn oorsprong in een 13de eeuws kasteel. Belangrijke uitbreidingen en restauraties hebben zich onder meer in de 17de eeuw voorgedaan onder Johan I Ortt, die ook de opdracht gaf voor de aanleg van een formele tuin. Vanaf 1907 was de buitenplaats in het bezit van de Amsterdamse koffiehandelaar Michiel Onnes. Hij liet het kasteel onder leiding van architect E.G. Wentinck herstellen naar een 17de eeuwse situatie en voegde enkele bijgebouwen toe. De tuinarchitecten L.A. Springer en H. Copijn waren verantwoordelijk voor de tussen 1912-1915 tot Landschappelijke tuin omgevormde aanleg met een gemengd karakter. Thans zetelt Nijenrode Universiteit voor Bedrijfskunde in het kasteel en is met de aankoop van grond in de richting van het Amsterdam Rijnkanaal het grondgebied van de buitenplaats opnieuw vergroot.
Omschrijving
Het toegangshek uit het midden van de achttiende eeuw in de stijl van Lodewijk XIV bevindt zich aan de Straatweg en markeert de zuidelijke entree van het park. Het hek staat op een gemetselde brug over de buitengracht. De concave keermuren van deze brug zijn met natuurstenen dekplaten afgesloten. Het hek bestaat uit twee natuurstenen hekpijlers op een vierkante plattegrond. De pijlers zijn uitgevoerd met rondom identieke classicistische pilasters, voorzien van breed uitkragende kroonlijsten. De bekroning van de pijlers wordt gevormd door een natuurstenen podium met bladmotief, waarop een met wapenschilden beklede deel rust, dat op zijn beurt een kroon draagt. De dubbele draaihekken van smeedijzer zijn spijlenhekken met convex en concaaf gevormde bovenzijden. In de vleugelstukken van getrokken smeedijzer aan weerszijden van de pijlers zijn de letters O en E in elkaar verweven.
Waardering
Het hek is van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische waarde als gaaf bewaard voorbeeld van een achttiende-eeuws toegangshek in de stijl van Lodewijk XIV in het bijzonder vanwege de functie, detaillering, materiaalgebruik en ouderdom alsmede van cultuurhistorische waarde als functioneel onderdeel van de buitenplaats Nijenrode en als herinnering aan de bewoners. Het hek heeft ensemblewaarde vanwege de beeldbepalende ligging aan de Straatweg, als visuele en functionele begrenzing van de zuidoostzijde van het park alsmede vanwege de visuele en ruimtelijk-functionele relatie met de andere onderdelen van het complex, in het bijzonder het botenhuis en de dienstwoning.

The country estate has its origins in a 13th-century castle. Important extensions and restorations took place notably in the 17th century under Johan I Ortt, who also commissioned the laying out of a formal garden. From 1907 the country estate was owned by Amsterdam coffee merchant Michiel Onnes. He had the castle restored under the direction of architect E.G. Wentinck to a 17th-century situation and added several outbuildings. The garden architects L.A. Springer and H. Copijn were responsible for the layout, transformed between 1912-1915 into a landscape garden of mixed character. Nijenrode University for Business Administration now has its seat in the castle and with the purchase of land in the direction of the Amsterdam Rijnkanaal the territory of the country estate has been enlarged again.
Description
The access gate from the middle of the eighteenth century in the style of Louis XIV is situated on the Straatweg and marks the southern entrance to the park. The gate stands on a masoned bridge over the outer moat. The concave retaining walls of this bridge are finished with natural stone coping stones. The gate consists of two natural stone gate piers on a square ground plan. The piers are executed with identical classicistic pilasters on all sides, provided with broadly projecting cornices. The crowning of the piers is formed by a natural stone plinth with leaf motif, on which rests a part decorated with coat-of-arms shields, which in turn carries a crown. The double wrought-iron swing gates are bar gates with convex and concave shaped tops. In the wing sections of wrought iron on either side of the piers the letters O and E are interwoven.
Valuation
The gate is of general interest on account of its architectural-historical value as a well-preserved example of an eighteenth-century access gate in the style of Louis XIV in particular on account of its function, detailing, use of materials and age and also of cultural-historical value as a functional component of the country estate Nijenrode and as a remembrance of the residents. The gate has ensemble value on account of its image-determining location on the Straatweg, as a visual and functional boundary of the south-eastern side of the park as well as on account of the visual and spatial-functional relationship with the other components of the complex, in particular the boathouse and the servants' quarters.
