Inleiding

Introduction

Semi-detached MANSION, located on the Willem II singel, was built in 1894 in Eclectic style after a design by architect J. Speetjens. The property was built by order of the Roermond paper manufacturer Burghhoff for his son. Burghoff, owner of the mill to the rear, lived himself in the adjacent property Willem II singel 19. The window frames have been renewed except for a single window. EXCLUDED from PROTECTION is the garage and the lean-to between the residence and garage.

Description

The MANSION has an L-shaped floor plan in two storeys under a steeply pitched hip roof with slate tiles in shingled arrangement with a top covered in shingles (originally clad in zinc) and a hipped roof. The facades are of red brick in English bond with a hardstone plinth. The facades contain rectangular window frames with double windows with rectangular and round-arch fanlights.

The FRONT FACADE consists of three bays, in the projecting left bay is located the entrance. The facade has a profiled hardstone plinth with two grilles, above which is a cordon line serving as a continuous sill for two window frames. In the first storey are two double wooden window frames with round-arch fanlight set in frames with orange profile stone interrupted by speckled courses with diamond pattern and voussoir stone. Between both windows is decorative stuccowork. In the second storey are windows with rectangular fanlight with dentil decoration under a segmental arch with springer and voussoir stones with diamond pattern and filler with interlacing. Below the windows is a cordon line with breast wall with cartouche. Further speckled courses with half-spheres and diamonds. The frieze has recessed sections with interlacing in orange profile stone, gutter on consoles. On the roof is a small roof dormer with a small hipped roof with finial.

The projecting bay has double wooden doors with ironwork, dentil decorations and handles and is accessible via two hardstone steps. The door has a round-arch fanlight in hardstone frame with springer and voussoir stone. Above the door is a hardstone balcony on consoles with lion heads and volutes and a balcony railing with among others the letter "B", dragons and a head.

In the second storey is a double wooden door with rectangular fanlight as the windows in the two other bays. On either side of this window frame are stuccoed semi-circular springer supports to consoles with volutes under triangular pilasters interrupted by hardstone diamonds at the location of the speckled courses. On the pilasters a cap stone with sphere with wrought-iron feathers and finial.

The projecting section is terminated by a stepped gable with shoulders and a frieze with "1894" and a pediment with finial. In the stepped gable is a two-part window with round-arch fanlight in hardstone frame. Against the front facade is a lantern.

The SIDE FACADE has on the far left at the location of the conservatory non-authentic three-part windows with fanlight under a lintel supported by two profiled cast-iron columns. To the right of this are two fanlights of blocked-in window frames. Above these fanlights are two double windows with rectangular fanlight. Further, the facade has ornamental wall anchors.

The REAR FACADE has on the right an extension with conservatory with on the first storey a double door between double windows with rectangular fanlights. Between the windows and doors are profiled cast-iron columns. In the second storey is a double window with rectangular fanlight with non-authentic roller blind. On the left is on the first storey a later added scullery constructed under a flat roof, next to a toilet block from 1925. The original fanlights in the authentic rear facade are located above the roof plane. In the second storey another double window with fanlight. In front of the rear facade is a brick stair to a water cellar located before the water well.

The STRUCTURE of the INTERIOR is highly intact.

VALUABLE INTERIOR COMPONENTS include among others the rich ceiling ornaments along walls and rosettes in the centre of two living rooms, present kitchen, hall and bedroom. Further wooden sliding doors among others with cut glass by "Bouvy" from "Dordt" and marble mantelpieces.
