Inleiding
Grafmonument voor Zouaaf Küppers. Een zouaaf was een soldaat in dienst van de paus, einde 19de eeuw, om de Vaticaanse Staat tegen de republikein Garibaldi te beschermen. Vanwege de vreemde krijgsdienst verloren zij in principe het Nederlanderschap. Het grafmonument is gesitueerd aan de oostzijde van het centrale middenpad op het kerkhof.
Omschrijving
Het grafmonument voor Zouaaf Küppers bestaat uit een kubusvormige gecementeerde bakstenen sokkel met hierin een zwarte marmeren plaat met inscriptie. Op deze sokkel een zandstenen beeld van zouaaf Küppers gekleed in zouavenuniform en wijzend naar Rome. Naast hem een zandstenen beeld van zijn geknielde weduwe.
Waardering
Het grafmonument bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere herinnering aan de zouaven die einde 19de eeuw vochten voor de Vaticaanse Staat, en het grafmonument is typologisch bijzonder te noemen. Het grafmonument bezit architectuurhistorische waarde wegens esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek. Ensemblewaarde ontleent het object aan de situering op het Oude kerkhof van Roermond en daarmee van belang voor het aanzien van de stad. Funerary monument for Zouave Küppers. A zouave was a soldier in service of the pope, end of the 19th century, to defend the Papal State against the republican Garibaldi. The funerary monument for Zouave Küppers consists of a cubic cemented brick plinth with within it a black marble plate with inscription. On this plinth a sandstone image of zouave Küppers dressed in zouave uniform and pointing towards Rome. Next to him a sandstone image of his kneeling widow.
