Inleiding
Verspreid over de hele begraafplaats vindt men karakteristieke, soms zeer monumentale groenelementen.
- hun cultuurhistorische, kunsthistorische en sociaal-historische waarde;
- de gaafheid van samenstelling van verschillende gedeelten op een algemene begraafplaats met alle bijkomende aspecten uit de funeraire cultuur van de verschillende gezindten;
- de nog aanwezige en grotendeels intacte aanleg, met muren en paden, zoals in de loop van de 19de-eeuw tot stand gebracht;
- de ensemblewaarde wegens de situering op korte afstand van de kapel in 't Zand en als geheel van groot belang voorhet aanzien van dit deel van Roermond;

Description
Introduction
WALLS, LAYOUT and GRAVE MONUMENTS on the municipal cemetery in the Kapel in 't Zand district, popularly known as "het Oude Kerkhof".
The old cemetery has a pentagonal ground plan, with the southern side following the slightly curved course of the Herkenbosscherweg/Weg langs het Kerkhof.
The cemetery is situated north of the Herkenbosscherweg/Weg langs het Kerkhof, which bends to the east and also forms the north-eastern boundary of the site. The Schoolpad borders the churchyard on the north-western side. The western boundary is formed by a wall that extends between the Herkenbosscherweg to the south and the Schoolpad to the north.
Description
WALLS. The entire cemetery is walled and partly divided by means of walls into a number of large and small compartments. At the Weg langs het Kerkhof there is a high brick wall, laid in hand-moulded brick in running bond and finished with a saddle back. The wall has high brick pilasters at regular intervals, finished with a natural stone saddle-roof-shaped coping with water drip. Here and there there are short brick buttresses with brick coping. The wall contains a number of offsets to accommodate the height difference. Various simple gates have been constructed in the wall, consisting of two brick gate posts with natural stone saddle-roof-shaped copings and double wrought-iron swing gates with short and long spars, arrowheads and scroll ornaments. The gates close with natural stone thumb blocks and newels. Along the Weg langs het Kerkhof a total of five openings in the wall are incorporated: four gates and a door. The first gate provides access to the general (Protestant) section of the cemetery. The second and third gates provide access to the Catholic section. The second gate formerly served as the main entrance to the cemetery, but this has been relocated to the third gate. This current main entrance has partly renewed brick posts and a renewed wrought-iron gate. Between the third and fourth gates is a small arched wooden hinged door under a lintel with arched underside. This door provides access to a powder magazine that is not under protected status. The last gate is somewhat broader than the previous gates and provides access to the final extension of the cemetery. The north-eastern part of the wall, also still along the Weg langs het Kerkhof, is partly laid in brick in Flemish bond and is of more recent date than the western part. At the end of this wall there is also a gate. This provides access to a screened-off section of the cemetery with storage area, shed and other facilities for employees. At the Schoolpad the wall continues with a gate directly at the beginning that provides access to the new Jewish cemetery. The westernmost part of the wall partly connects to buildings between the Schoolpad and the Herkenbosscherweg.
LAYOUT. The general section of the cemetery, where notably Reformed inhabitants of Roermond were buried, is located in the south-western part of the site. This section, bordering the Weg langs het Kerkhof, has a rectangular ground plan with a smaller compartment for the old Jewish section in the eastern part. A gate provides direct access to the road here, but is usually accessed via a simple gate passage in the brick wall that separates this section from the Catholic section. The passage in the northern wall is provided with two brick posts. Like the other walls, the dividing wall is closed with a brick saddle back. The general section possesses a very simple rectilinear path system, without clear structure. The old Jewish section of the cemetery is accessible via a simple passage in the eastern interior wall of the general section. This section, where only a handful of stelae remain, has no particular structure but lies approximately half a metre higher than the general section. Planting is absent here. The new Jewish section is located in the north corner of the cemetery. This is enclosed on the outside (northern and eastern sides) by the wall type described above. An interior wall of more recent date provided with pilasters, recessed panels and a saddle-back-shaped finish separates this section from the rest of the cemetery. There is an entrance in the northern wall that provides access from outside. Between the Catholic section and the Jewish cemetery a small rectangular wall opening has been made in the western wall. Like the old Jewish section, this new cemetery is also completely without trees. A gravel-covered cruciform main path divides this section into a number of large compartments, with the graves arranged in north-west to south-east running lines. The paths are separated from the graves by means of low hedges. South of the new Jewish cemetery is the mortuary chapel and the "graveyard for the lost souls" that is separated from the rest of the cemetery by a privet hedge. In front of the mortuary chapel there is also a remnant of a double wrought-iron gate. In the wall on the eastern side there is a gate entrance as elsewhere. The rest of the cemetery is the Catholic section. This section possesses a rectilinear path structure, as is often applied for such cemeteries. Determining for the main structure is the western boundary of the site, whose course (north-west to south-east) is taken up by all roughly north-south running paths. The Catholic section is divided into a large number of large and small rectangular compartments and a system of elongated broad and narrow paths, which intersect each other at purely right angles. The central axis is the broad path that divides the Catholic section into a western and eastern half. This axis is interrupted by the monumental Episcopal Grave Chapel, on which east-west running paths are also oriented. The main axis begins on the southern side at a gate entrance and ends on the northern side at the fine neo-Gothic grave chapel of the Bongaerts family (1860). On this main axis one finds the most representative graves of this cemetery. Notably in the central and eastern section of the R.C. section there are small circular widenings at a number of main path crossings.
The space within the main compartments is served by many narrow, closely-spaced paths in a north-south running direction. There are only a few broader paths that run in an east-west direction to serve the site. The eastern part of the R.C. cemetery is divided by broad paths into a number of large rectangular compartments, within which there is a finer structure of north-south running lines.
Scattered across the entire cemetery one finds characteristic, sometimes very monumental vegetation elements. Along the broad north-south running path in the south-eastern corner of the site stands a number of monumental beeches. Also on both sides of the grave chapel at the northern end of the main axis stand monumental beeches. On the four corners of the crossing south of the former mortuary chapel there are also beeches. Furthermore, there are various solitary vegetation elements (larch, weeping tree, birch) on the site, placed at graves or along paths. In many cases these have grown into substantial specimens of conifers. In the western part of the Catholic section, on both sides of the paths, there are a number of sturdy, spherically clipped conifers. Here and there there are groups of conifers.
GRAVE MONUMENTS. The variety of grave coverings and monumental grave monuments is great. The grave monuments arranged in long lines, often head to head, are sometimes very simple in design. Most grave monuments consist of simple rectangular compartments, either surrounded or not by hardstone edgings, with a grave marker placed at the back. Cross-shaped markers naturally predominate in the Catholic section. Particularly in the more representative sections, along the main axes, many grave monuments are provided with richly decorated cross forms. Here are found fine, elaborately executed monuments, mostly in neo-Gothic style, provided with architectural motifs and sculpture. At the main path stand also the monumental grave chapels: the Episcopally protected Episcopal Grave Chapel designed in 1887 by P.J.H. Cuypers. Furthermore, a small neo-Gothic chapel from 1860 (Bongaerts grave chapel) at the northern end of the main axis, an almost entirely natural stone building with a gabled roof, window and portal with wooden door and fanlight with rose window and fine natural stone ornamentation. South of the Episcopal Grave Chapel stands a second central building (Stolzenberg grave chapel) on a hexagonal ground plan, provided with a slate-covered tent roof, cross-bonded walls with natural stone plinth, drip mouldings, corner blocks and window surrounds. In four sides there are narrow pointed-arch windows. The front (at the main path) has a monumental entrance arrangement. The materials used are predominantly hardstone, but sandstone, granite and other types of natural stone are also used. Noteworthy is also a number of ceramic grave monuments in the Catholic section. Many large grave monuments are surrounded by wrought-iron fencing. Among these are examples of very rich design. One of the most famous grave monuments is located on both sides of the dividing wall between the Catholic section and the general section: the grave monument with hands, belonging to the Catholic-Protestant married couple J.W.C. van Gorkum-van Aefferden.
In the western part of the cemetery there is a number of old epitaphs, embedded in the churchyard wall. These epitaphs date from the first half of the 19th century and are a strong reference to the early use of this cemetery. No monument was placed on the grave but in memory an epitaph was placed. Furthermore, the cemetery contains many graves of well-known and lesser-known inhabitants who were of significance to Roermond, Limburg or the Netherlands. Also a number of grave plots for monastery members occupy a special place in the Catholic section of the cemetery. The grave markers in the general (Protestant) and Jewish cemeteries are generally sombre in execution and in accordance with the ideas of the respective religion.
Valuation
WALLS, LAYOUT and GRAVE MONUMENTS on the old cemetery show a development history that is virtually unique in the Netherlands. The components that have been preserved in intact condition are worthy of protection because of:
- their cultural-historical, art-historical and social-historical value;
- the integrity of composition of different sections on a general cemetery with all associated aspects from the funerary culture of the different denominations;
- the still present and largely intact layout, with walls and paths, as established over the course of the 19th century;
- the ensemble value due to its location in close proximity to the chapel in 't Zand and as a whole of major importance to the appearance of this part of Roermond;
- finally, the Oude Kerkhof complex is of general importance because of the high degree of integrity of the layout, individual graves and chapels. There is also the matter of architectural-historical and high cultural-historical rarity.
