Inleiding.

Introduction.

The MINOR SEMINARY in Traditionalist style with Neo-Romanesque elements is situated around a courtyard and was built on a free-standing plan. It consists of three wings from 1923 designed by friar E. Molengraaf and an extension from 1933 by S. Switzar jr., comprising a chapel and an extension of the west and east wings. The complex has a rural setting and is located in a landscaped park with various valuable trees predating construction, including a hornbeam and an elm, and a pond from a later period. The minor seminary was built by the Damian Foundation, which was established in Grave in 1896 as part of the Congregation of the Fathers of the Sacred Hearts. The Damian College was housed in the building from 1923 to 1971. Since then it has been in use as a reception centre.

At the end of the war the building was requisitioned by the German occupier and sustained damage in the fighting, part of which remains visible.

Description.

The three wings which together form the college are three storeys high and situated beneath gabled roofs with wide eaves, covered with improved Dutch tiles. The buildings are constructed of machine-made brick and have a concrete frame, likewise floors and foundations. The three wings are cellared. The facades have brick ornamentation and a high plinth of cement mortar. The west wing features a central risalit with a stepped gable beneath a gabled roof. Here is located the double entrance door beneath a semicircular fanlight. To the left of the door a ceramic commemorative stone has been placed marking completion on 3 June 1924. On the courtyard side this wing has an identical but shallower central risalit, which houses the staircase. The southern wing has a bent ground plan and continues past the western wing. At the bend a transverse wing has been built three bays long, identifiable on the courtyard side by a stepped gable, transverse to the wing. In the corner of both structures stands a square, three-storey tower beneath a tent roof, covered with improved Dutch tiles. The tower features brick ornamentation in the roof cornice. The cross which stood on the spire has been lost. The tower serves as a staircase. The corner of the south and east facades consists of a staircase on a trapezoidal ground plan which continues above the roof edge and is crowned with crenellations on both the exterior and courtyard sides. In the corner of the east and north wing a similar tower has been placed as was built onto the south wing. Here too the original cross on the tower spire is missing. Beside the tower stands a projecting staircase on a square ground plan and beneath a flat roof with crenellations. The crenellations continue across the entire north wall of the courtyard.

The facades are articulated by brick pilasters located on the division of the bays and which run up to the third storey. Each bay features a twofold division consisting on the first and second storeys of two semicircular windows beneath a brick eyebrow moulding and on the third floor of two square windows with iron frames. The twofold division within the bay is emphasised by a brick pilaster up to the second storey. The facades facing the courtyard by contrast feature a bay division of brick pilasters which run to the second storey.

All semicircular windows facing the courtyard, with the exception of those of the old part of the west wing, are furnished with stained and leaded glass windows with rich detailing by Dr. H. Oidtmann, restored in 1947 by W.A. van Ben. All semicircular windows on the exterior of the buildings are furnished with iron frames, with the exception of those of the old part of the west wing, where clear leaded glass windows have been installed.

Where the south and east wings meet, a gallery has been built with an open side, running in an easterly direction. Workshops have been built against the closed side. The wooden canopy features worked cross-beams. The interior layout has remained substantially intact; only on the attic floor has the layout been altered. The refectories on the ground floor are still partly recognisable. The corridors on the ground floor have terrazzo floors with walls and pilasters finished in fair-faced brickwork. The pilasters terminate in semicircular arches which support the straight-edged concrete ceiling. In the corridors on the upper floor the ceilings are supported by straight-edged roof trusses. The spacious staircases in the west and north wings and in the corner of the south and east wing are finished in fair-faced brickwork with Neo-Romanesque detailing in amongst other things the balustrades and the climbing semicircular arches.

The north wing consists of a two-storey building housing the hall on the ground floor and an oriented three-aisled chapel on the upper floor. The hall is now in use as a sports hall; the chapel is used for storage. The building is constructed of machine-made brick and has a concrete frame structure. The gabled roof of the chapel, as well as the lean-to roofs of the side aisles are covered with improved Dutch tiles. The front facade features a symmetrical composition with a central risalit beneath a gabled roof. In the stepped gable a round window has been installed with natural stone surround. The semicircular apse and semicircular northern transept arm have a tent roof. From the south facade projects the narrow square bell tower, crowned by a tall, pointed helm roof, covered with copper plate. A diamond-shaped sound opening has been cut in the roof.

In the three-aisled hall on the ground floor the concrete frame structure of square columns is visible. In the north wall are located high-positioned semicircular windows with iron frames. In the east wall is located a stage with concrete surround. The interior of the austere chapel is constructed of yellow facing brick. The barrel vault of the central aisle and the straight-edged ceiling of the side aisles are stuccoed and painted white. The central aisle comprises five bays, separated from one another by a brick pilaster, which continues as a rib of the barrel vault. The central aisle is separated from the side aisles by semicircular arches between the pilasters. Semicircular arches are also placed in the side aisles between the pilasters and the outer wall. Central aisle and choir are separated from one another by a triumphal arch. The choir has a brick vault. In the northern wall each bay of the side aisle contains three semicircular windows with iron frames. In the barrel vault three semicircular windows with relieving arches are placed between the ribs. The choir balcony is separated from the central nave by a semicircular arch. In the vestibule beneath the choir balcony are located the confessionals. In the sealed northern transept arm there was space for five celebration altars. The altars themselves have been removed. In the sacristy are a large wooden credence table and a large safe.

Valuation.

The Damian College is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as testimony to the development of Catholicism, particularly the foundation of educational institutions by orders and congregations and also as an example of the typological development of a minor seminary. It has architectural-historical value as a fine example of cloister building on a free-standing plan in Traditionalist style with Neo-Romanesque elements and as an example of the oeuvre of architects E. Molengraaf and S. Switzar jr. It has building-historical value because of the materials used and the detailing, particularly regarding the concrete frame structure, the brick ornamentation and the stained and leaded glass windows. It is complete and well-preserved. Moreover it is rare as an example of a minor seminary on a free-standing plan, as a variant on the square-plan layout of cloisters.
