Inleiding

Omschrijving

Introduction

The LOCK with bridge was constructed as an implementation of plans for the improvement of the 'Inland Water Authority' by the Provincial Water Authority Service. One of these plans involved the connection of the Frisian waterways with those of Drenthe, in particular for the benefit of peat transport. Moreover, in this way controlled drainage of the higher-lying Drenthe could be achieved. An important step was taken in 1894 by the removal of the dam between the Witte Wijk and the Appelschastervaart, which was a continuation of the Opsterlandse Compagnonsvaart. The lock was substantially restored in the 1960s, whereby new materials were used and new lamps were installed. Subsequently the bridge was renewed in a historicizing manner.

Description

The lock entrances on either side of the lock chamber lie asymmetrically with respect to each other. The floor of the lock consists of concrete. The lock walls are built up in clinker bricks and closed off by a stretcher course on which a guide rail, with armoured concrete corner reinforcements and cover plates on the lock heads. On the lock heads stand windlasses, for water discharge without locking. The lock gates consist of a framework of riveted mild steel with a covering of sheet iron; on the lock gate is a balustrade. The wall sides are paved with paving tiles; along the chamber iron bollards are embedded. On the right side stand two street lamps along the lock chamber. Upstream, outside the lock, is a bridgehead with a lifting bridge. The wing walls of the land abutments are angled in and have a stairway leading upwards. In the wall of the left land abutment is a commemorative stone with the year: 1894. The balustrades on the land abutments are original.

Valuation

The so-called Dam Lock from 1894 is of cultural-historical importance:

- as a special expression of the socio-economic development of Southeast Friesland, which is connected with peat transport,

- as a special expression of the water authority development, which is connected with the improvement since 1876 of the network of waterways in Southeast Friesland that connects the province with Drenthe,

- on account of the historical-spatial relationship with the Drenthe waterway on the border of Friesland and Drenthe,

- on account of the high degree of visual integrity in connection with the lock keeper's dwelling,

- on account of the reasonable degree of rarity and as an exemplary example of the locks on this waterway.
