Inleiding
De GRENSMARKERING nabij het van rijkswege beschermde complex Damsluis, op de hoek van de Vaart ZZ en de Kolonievaart is karakteristiek voor de Fries-Drentse grens. De provinciegrenzen op de woeste gronden in het zuidoosten werden tussen 1850 en 1940 verschillende malen opnieuw gemarkeerd of gewijzigd, onder meer als gevolg van verveningsactiviteiten. In 1895 kwamen er op de ruim 46 km. lange grensscheiding met de provincie Drenthe, waarover al in de achttiende eeuw conflicten waren gerezen, 149 nieuwe gietijzeren grensmarkeringen te staan. De materiaalkeuze werd ingegeven door de omstandigheid dat gietijzer goedkoper was dan natuursteen, terwijl het ook minder tot diefstal zou noden dan stenen of houten palen. De grensmarkeringen zijn soms als paalmuts over een houten paal geschoven. Laagste inschrijver voor de uitvoering van het werk was W.J. Boltje uit Oudehaske.
Omschrijving
Een ingegraven conische holle gietijzeren grensmarkering, beschilderd met zwart-witte banden. Op de schacht gietijzeren appliques met de heraldische provinciewapens van de provincies Drenthe en Friesland.

The BOUNDARY MARKING near the nationally protected complex Damsluis, at the corner of the Vaart ZZ and the Kolonievaart is characteristic of the Frisian-Drentian border. The provincial boundaries on the wasteland in the southeast were remarked or altered several times between 1850 and 1940, among other reasons as a result of peat extraction activities. In 1895, 149 new cast-iron boundary markings were placed along the boundary with the province of Drenthe, which was more than 46 km long and over which conflicts had arisen already in the eighteenth century.
