Inleiding
Het SLUISWACHTERSHUIS is in 1894 gebouwd in opdracht en naar standaardontwerp van de Provinciale Waterstaat. De bouw van de woning hield direct verband met de ruiming van de dam in de vaart en de aanleg van de zogenaamde Damsluis ter plaatse. Dit blijkt ook uit de opschriften op tegeltableaus in het woonhuis. De woning is georiënteerd op het vaarwater met de schutsluis. Het woonhuis ligt op een ruim erf met aan de achterzijde een ruime tuin. Aan de achterzijde is een houten portaal aangebouwd, dit valt buiten bescherming van rijkswege.
Omschrijving
De plattegrond van de dienstwoning is in de vorm van een winkelhaak. De woning bestaat uit één bouwlaag onder een samengesteld zadel/schilddak. Het pand is voor-namelijk opgetrokken in bruine bakstenen. De plint is beraapt met portlandcement en met beroete bakstenen zijn horizontale banden aangeduid, regelmatig over de gevels verdeeld. Bovendien is deze pigmentering toegepast als verlevendiging op de imitatie-sluitsteen en op de liggende koppenlaag boven de segmentboog. Het samengestelde zadel/schilddak met een ruim overstek is belegd met ge-smoorde gegolfde Friese pannen. De windveer van de topgevel is voorzien van een sierlijst; de gootlijsten zijn thans vlak. Op de hoeken van de om-gaande gootlijsten zijn eenvoudige, blokvormige decoraties, zonder knop, aangebracht. Op de hoeken van de nok zijn houten afdekkingen over de koningstijlen geplaatst; aan de topgevel een aangepunte hangende makelaar bekroond met siersmeedwerk en windvaan waarin het jaartal 1894 is uitgezaagd. Bijna alle vensters in de voor- en zijgevels hebben een natuurstenen lek-dorpel en zijn afgesloten door een segmentboog met een trommelveld bestaande uit siermetselwerk van bruine, rode en gele baksteentjes. De oorspronkelijke ramen, drie-ruits in de zijgevels en zes-ruits in de voorgevel, hebben buitenluiken. De voordeur in de krimp heeft een paneeldeur met een twee-ruits bovenlicht. Nieuwe vensters zijn aangebracht in de noordwestgevel en in de zuidwestelijke geveltop. De achtergevel is gewijzigd door de aanbouw van een houten voorportaal. In het dakschild erboven is een drielicht-dakkapel met plat dak. In het zuidwestelijke dakschild is boven de deur een dakkapel onder zadeldak. Het INTERIEUR is gewijzigd. In de gang hangen twee tegeltableaus, die oor-spronkelijk dienden als schoorsteenmantelversiering, met de opschriften: ANNO 1894; De oudheid zocht in scheiding kracht, Deez tijd eischt vrij verkeer, Dies werd de sluis tot stand gebracht, Die Friesland strekt tot eer. The LOCK KEEPER'S HOUSE was built in 1894 on the orders of and according to a standard design of the Provincial Water Board. The construction of the dwelling was directly related to the clearing of the dam in the waterway and the construction of the so-called Dam Lock at that location. This is also evident from the inscriptions on tile tableaux in the residential house. The dwelling is oriented towards the waterway with the shipping lock. The residential house is situated on a spacious plot with an extensive garden at the rear. At the rear a wooden portal has been added, which falls outside national monument protection.
Description
The floor plan of the service dwelling is in the shape of an L. The dwelling consists of one storey under a composite gabled/hipped roof. The building is primarily constructed of brown brickwork. The plinth is rendered with Portland cement and darkened bricks indicate horizontal bands, regularly distributed across the façades. Furthermore this pigmentation has been applied as embellishment to the imitation keystone and to the horizontal header course above the segmental arch. The composite gabled/hipped roof with generous eaves is covered with smeared corrugated Frisian tiles. The wind vane of the gable is provided with a decorative moulding; the gutter mouldings are now flat. Simple, blocky decorations, without a knob, have been placed at the corners of the surrounding gutter mouldings. At the corners of the ridge timber claddings have been placed over the king posts; at the gable a tapered hanging decorative bracket crowned with decorative ironwork and a weather vane in which the date 1894 is sawn out. Almost all windows in the front and side façades have a natural stone sill and are enclosed by a segmental arch with a drum field consisting of decorative brickwork of brown, red and yellow bricks. The original windows, three-pane in the side façades and six-pane in the front façade, have external shutters. The front door in the corner has a panelled door with a two-pane fanlight. New windows have been inserted in the northwest façade and in the southwest gable top. The rear façade has been altered by the addition of a wooden entrance portal. In the roof above it is a three-light roof dormer with a flat roof. In the southwest roof slope above the door is a roof dormer under a gabled roof. The INTERIOR has been altered. Two tile tableaux hang in the hallway, which originally served as chimney breast decoration, with the inscriptions: ANNO 1894; Antiquity sought strength in separation, This time demands free traffic, Thus the lock was brought into being, Which brings honour to Friesland.
