Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The SICK PAVILION 'Sint Cornelius' was built as part of the complex 'Sint Willibrordus', situated to the left rear (NE) on the site and parallel to its length axis. The tendering of this building, also designed by Thunissen and Hendricks, took place in July 1933 and by the end of the following year it was nearly complete. This pavilion, presumably also built by contractor Bot from Heerhugowaard, was intended for the care of epileptic patients. With this in mind, the stairs were provided with extra landings to minimise risks during possible seizures. The pavilion 'Sint Cornelius' remains both externally and internally in virtually its original state, equipped for patient accommodation.
Description
A longitudinal building erected on an almost rectangular ground plan with two storeys under a gabled roof covered with suppressed improved Dutch tiles, which is raised at the projecting corner sections. Behind the partially cellared building is a parallel rear wing connected to the main building by two cross walls on either side of a small rectangular courtyard. The rear wing has a gabled roof covered with the same tiles between spout gables. The facades of the pavilion, laid in bond, are executed below the ground floor windows in red nuanced machine-made brick (format 19-20 x 5 cm) with slightly backward-sloping mortar joints and above in yellow nuanced machine-made brick (same format and mortar work). The masonry is finished with a broad brick gutter on heavy corbels. Below the windows, robust black-glazed drip-edge tiles are used. In the centre of the symmetrical front facade (N) is a concrete canopy on grey granite wall piers with a double oak wooden front door between narrow side windows, fitted with glass panels and a cross motif. Above the canopy are seven paired fanlights with pastel-coloured leaded glass, and on either side of the entrance is a twelve-pane vertical window with a three-pane sash window at the top. In bronze letters above the entrance stands "SINT CORNELIUS". Above this, the front facade has a loggia consisting of three round arches resting on two double columns of grey granite. The loggia is accessible via an oak wooden door surrounded by windows in the rear wall. On either side of the loggia, the front facade has two narrow windows, below which on the ground floor is one narrow window. Both left and right of the centre, the front facade is articulated by two three-sided bay windows extending to roof height, with composite windows, concrete corner posts, and at the height of the floor level an inset terracotta relief tile of a bird. Between the bay windows and the corner sections, composite windows are also used (likewise with low-set central mullions, glazing bars and low backward-sloping fanlights closed at the top by a moveable ventilation flap). The corner sections themselves are provided with three window axes with a six-pane window on both the ground floor and first floor (with the same central mullion and fanlight) and recessed ornamental brickwork between. The front facade further includes seven roof dormers, all with slate-covered sides, a flat roof with overhang on the front, and sash windows at the top of the windows: on the corner sections and in the centre a wider one with respectively a horizontal six-pane and four-pane window (between modern grilles) and four narrower ones between with a four-pane window. The side facades executed as spout gables have on the left and right the same window axis as in the front of the corner sections, and in the centre both on the ground floor and first floor three (a double between two single) composite windows as in the front facade. At the top of the symmetrical side facades are two narrow windows, and below, at the height of the attic storey, is a broad composite window between two six-pane windows. The rear facades (S) of the projecting corner sections are identical to their front facades. The symmetrical south facade of the extension around the courtyard in the rear centre counts both on the ground floor and first floor three pairs of windows - each window consists of two paired four-pane windows - with between the two windows of each pair four bands of horizontal orange tiles. In the centre of the side facades of the rear wing, executed as spout gables, are two paired four-pane windows above which at the height of the first floor is an oak wooden door (with four-pane fanlight) in front of which is a small balcony with wrought-iron railing. At the top of the spout gables is a diamond-shaped attic window. The recessed side facades of the built-out central section have below the same door (with canopy) next to which is a six-pane window and above which is a composite window. The two facade sections between the central extension and the corner sections count both on the ground floor and first floor five large window sections under a continuous concrete canopy. These window sections, separated by pilasters with five bands of horizontal orange tiles, consist on the ground floor of four paired six-pane windows and on the floor of a steel thirty-pane (10 wide x 3 high) sash window (with a fifteen-pane fixed section and next to it a likewise sliding part with grilles). The rear facade includes in total six roof dormers as described, of which four have a six-pane window and two have a nine-pane window (above the facade section between the central extension and western corner section). The interior is largely in its original state. Both the central hall below and that on the first floor have an original tile floor (including red, blue and yellow tiles) and, like the vestibule, authentic wall cladding of glazed yellow tiles. The rear wall (S) of the hall below is provided with a three-sided bay window whose steel windows overlook the courtyard. Against the rear wall is a landing staircase which above the said bay window is separated from the hall by a partition wall with ornamental ironwork. At the lower landing of the stairs, in the east wall of the hall, a limestone high-relief is inset depicting St. Cornelius standing. The stairs have steps of polished cream-coloured limestone and landing floors as in the hall itself. From the hall, a door leads to the basement below. The corridor around the courtyard likewise has an original tile floor (red and yellow) and wall cladding (as mentioned). From the central hall on the ground floor and the first floor, notably wide corridors situated along the rear facade lead to the various rooms and halls. The wide corridors reportedly allowed patients to dissipate their motor restlessness. In good weather, the mentioned glass sliding doors of the corridor on the first floor could be opened. The wide corridors, the rooms and halls are furnished with linoleum (or carpet), plastered walls and ceilings. Between the various spaces are glass doors. Nearly all original doors are still present. Most have a raised panel, three windows at the top, and a curved door frame. Noteworthy in some rooms are the blue-glazed windowsill tiles. Besides the main staircase in the hall, there are two other stairways in original condition. Both have a tile floor of red and yellow tiles in a checkerboard pattern and wall cladding of cream-coloured tiles with red accents. The staircase steps are executed in polished cream-coloured limestone. Also some (tiled) toilet facilities are in their original state. In the centre of the attic storey is a hall with a granite floor and plastered walls. The attic has a boarded collar-tie roof truss.
Valuation
The sick pavilion 'Sint Cornelius' is of general importance for its cultural and architectural historical value as a carefully designed and well-preserved historical-functional component of the complex 'Sint Willibrordus', as an example of building in traditionalist style in the 1930s designed by J.H. Hendricks and M. Thunissen.
