Inleiding

Description
Introduction
In the southwestern corner of the factory grounds lies the former FIRE ENGINE GARAGE, built according to a design from 1925. According to tradition, a fire in one of the storage warehouses was the reason for the construction of this 'fire pump house' and later led to the establishment of its own works fire brigade on 12 August 1928. Elsewhere on the grounds a wooden training tower was built later for the works fire brigade.
The facades are completely exposed on the grounds. The south facade borders on the Almystraat and the building is oriented with its ridge parallel to this street. The garage was built by architect O. Triebel from Oisterwijk and is constructed in a style containing elements of Expressionism. Stylistically there are similarities to be found with the new office building from the same period.
Description
The garage has one storey under a hipped roof with bent eaves and has a rectangular floor plan. The interior consists of just one space. On the roof bituminous materials in Dutch bond pattern. The roof light in the western roof slope is sealed. The building is of brick, concrete, wood and iron. The structure consists of load-bearing brick walls in combination with concrete beams and floor slabs above which a wooden roof truss is located. Its timbers are anchored to the concrete slab. Along the bottom of the brick facade walls, laid in Flemish bond, runs a plinth. At the top the facades are finished with a substantial roof overhang supported by brackets. To this iron gutter brackets are attached. On the corners fluted corner pilasters. The west and east facades consist of two bays. The northernmost bay is provided in both facades with a large square vehicle entrance under a stone course with decoratively laid voussoir. In each entrance gate are divided wooden doors with lights which are fitted with geometric ornamental ironwork. In the southernmost bay there is in both facades a (probably new) 8-light wooden pivot window under a stone course with decoratively laid voussoir and with a brick sill.
According to the building drawings, a vehicle entrance was also planned in this bay in both the west and east facades. However, it is uncertain whether these were actually executed and subsequently removed or never realized. In the northeast corner the (remains of the) original diagonally placed light fixtures are still visible above. The north and south facades consist of four bays. Per bay, above the plinth, a slightly recessed panel begins in which the same pivot window as in the west and east facades is located above. The decoratively laid voussoir above the window extends to the roof overhang.
Valuation
The object is of general interest because it represents a cultural-historical value. It illustrates the pioneering character of the business management in socio-economic terms; for the safety and well-being of staff and business various facilities were provided on or just outside the factory grounds. Furthermore, the object is of interest because of its architectural integrity. Finally, the object has ensemble values, as it forms part of a larger whole that is of national importance.
