Inleiding
BRUG met poort en hekwerk, gebouwd in 1910 naar ontwerp van de architect J.H.H. van Groenendael in strakke, aan de art nouveau gerelateerde eclectische vormen. Het geheel is vermoedelijk als toegang voor het bij het instituut horende koetshuis ontworpen en bevindt zich aan de noordwestelijke (linker) zijde van het terrein boven de gracht die het instituutsterrein van de openbare weg scheidt. De brug heeft tegenwoordig geen functie meer aangezien het achterterrein via een grote weg aan de linkerzijde van het terrein toegankelijk is.
Omschrijving
Brug met poort, onderbouw van machinale baksteen gemetseld in kruisverband. Twee gemetselde penanten met hardstenen bekleding van de voet en met hardstenen bekroning. Aan de voorzijde bevinden zich twee kleine natuurstenen schamppaaltjes. Siersmeedijzeren openslaand hekwerk met onder meer krulwerk, pijlpunten en een kruisbekroning. Aan de instituutszijde bevindt zich nog een lage, gemetselde, opengewerkte balustrade. De brug zwenkt naar het midden iets in.
Waardering
De brug met poort is van algemeen belang. De brug met poort heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van de typologische ontwikkeling van de architectuur van de voornamelijk door religieuzen geleide gezondheidszorg in het zuiden van Nederland rond 1900. De brug met poort heeft architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de hoogwaardige kwaliteit van de toegepaste stijlelementen en vanwege de plaats die het object inneemt in het oeuvre van de architect J.H.H. van Groenendael. Introduction
BRIDGE with gateway and ironwork, built in 1910 according to the design of architect J.H.H. van Groenendael in strict, art nouveau-related eclectic forms. The whole is presumed to have been designed as an entrance for the coach house belonging to the institute and is located on the northwestern (left) side of the grounds above the moat which separates the institute grounds from the public road. The bridge has no function nowadays since the rear grounds are accessible via a large road on the left side of the grounds.
Description
Bridge with gateway, substructure of machine-made brickwork laid in English bond. Two built-in pilasters with hard stone cladding of the foot and with hard stone coping. On the front are two small natural stone chamfered bollards. Ornamental wrought-iron swinging ironwork with amongst other things scrollwork, arrowheads and a cross-crowned finial. On the institute side there is still a low, built-in, open-worked balustrade. The bridge curves slightly towards the middle.
Valuation
The bridge with gateway is of general importance. The bridge with gateway has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of the typological development of the architecture of healthcare led predominantly by religious personnel in the south of the Netherlands around 1900.
