Inleiding

Introduction

COUNTRY HOUSE "Mariënberg", built in 1893 commissioned by The Hague judge Sasse in eclectic forms. The country house is centrally located on the site and is surrounded on all sides by a garden.

Description

Partially cellared country house of two storeys and three bays on roughly square ground plan with facades in fine brickwork of machine-made brick, laid in English bond and cut and jointed flush. The plinth is cemented. The house has a number of combined gabled roofs and hipped roofs and a flat roof above the staircase. The roofs are covered with black Dutch tiles and above the kitchen section with improved Dutch tiles. The roofs on the west side are lower than the roof on the east side which is T-shaped in design. In the eastern roof slope there is an oval oeil-de-boeuf roof dormer. Although from an architectural perspective the eastern facade can be regarded as the front facade, the entrance is located on the western side. This is designed inconspicuously and consists of two renewed glass panel doors. A striking aspect of the rear facade is formed by the large, straight-sided window of the staircase fitted with a large cross window. The staircase is higher than the adjacent building sections such as the kitchen and the back room. Above the entrance there is a small roof terrace. The masonry of the residential section is here recessed and is finished with a spout gable with a circular vent with iron tracery.

The north facade has among other features two double French doors which are fitted on the outside with wooden shutters.

The south facade is only soberly detailed. Here are a cellar entrance and a greenhouse with glass panes against the kitchen section. The east facade on the street side is provided with cemented white corner pilasters with pilaster ornamentation. The central section is designed slightly projecting. The facade is further ornamented by means of white, cemented banding. The upper storey windows are slightly arched and have T-sash windows. At the top they are provided with cemented lintels with flower motif and further have a profiled frame and stone sills. The windows can be closed by wooden shutters. On the ground floor there are three pairs of French glass panel doors with fanlights. These too can be closed with wooden shutters. On the front the facade has a wooden frieze with geometric decoration. Against the front facade, covering virtually the entire width of the building, is the richly detailed wooden veranda with among other features arches resting on slender columns with openwork and hanging posts. The central section of the veranda is crowned with a segmental arch pediment ornamented with scrollwork. On the sides the openings are closed with glass. The floor of the veranda is laid with hexagonal yellow and black tiles.

Internally the layout is still original. However, around 1970 both a number of doors and the wainscoting were removed. The remaining ornamentation is therefore sober. The most important elements of this are: the ceilings of the entrance hall and adjoining room finished with sober geometric motifs, the somewhat more elaborate stucco ceilings with floral and twisted motifs in both front rooms and the wooden staircase which is only soberly detailed. On the upper floor there is no further noteworthy ornamentation.

The entrance to the house is located at the rear and gives access to a spacious, tile-paved central hall from which all rooms on the ground floor can be reached. Directly on the sides are the slightly lower spaces of the kitchen and a study. At the front are the two principal rooms of the house. The doors to the veranda still have the original wooden panel casing in the jambs. The living rooms all have wooden plank floors except the kitchen. On the upper floor, at the somewhat lower floor level of the small side rooms at the rear, the height difference with the front section can be clearly seen. These were perhaps originally the quarters for staff. At the front are a spacious bedroom and sanitary facilities.

Valuation

The country house is of general importance. The country house has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of socio-economic development whereby the well-to-do middle class and the administrative elite settled in the immediate vicinity of 's-Hertogenbosch on the exit roads to the smaller, more rural towns around it and had a country house built there.

The country house is of architectural-historical importance because of the particular coherence between the constituent components, the typological and art-historical quality of the applied eclectic and colonial style elements, in particular in the veranda. The country house has ensemble value in conjunction with the garden and the carriage house because of the high quality of the buildings and the historical-spatial relationship with the roads and green amenities.

The country house is important because of the building-technical and typological rarity which it possesses as such.
