Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The MISSION HOUSE ST. FRANCISCUS XAVERIUS of the German congregation Societas Verbi Divini was built in 1916-'17 as a rectangular building of seven window bays, according to a specification worked out by Father Möchel. On both sides the building was enlarged in 1925-'27 to a total of seventeen window bays with a U-shaped plan. It then also received the chapel which closes off the northern part. In 1972 the conversion took place from mission house to home for the elderly, for which various alterations were carried out between 1973 and 1975. The interior was altered and behind the existing part a new pavilion, also for non-religious persons, was built.
Description
The three-storey building with basement has a U-shaped plan. The gabled and mansard roofs are covered with black tuile-du-nord tiles. The facades are constructed of machine-made brick. Cornices and double decorative mouldings at the eaves are of red tilework. The window sills of the building part from 1916 are of concrete, the others of ashlar. At the alternating sills there are sandstone corner blocks.
The corner risalits under mansard roof project further forward than the centre risalit, and each counts three bays. The upper two storeys of the risaliting parts are accentuated by pilasters. The window arrangement is rhythmic. First there are the six-paned arched basement windows, followed by three storeys of wide arched twelve-paned sash windows. At the centre risalit on the principal storey two arched eight-paned sash windows are placed. A flight of steps with open-worked brick balustrade and ashlar finishing leads to the central entrance with renewed double doors. The semicircular fanlight has been given a new arrangement. Above the door there are two windows with semicircular fanlight, as above each window of the recessed parts. Finally a six-paned window with semicircular fanlight has been placed in the pointed gable above the entrance, which is crowned with a cross. The hipped roof behind it ends in an octagonal bell tower with spire placed in 1926, on which slates in Maas bond. In the remaining roof parts arched six-paned roof dormers are placed.
The side gable on the right-hand side is austere and counts after a blind part five window bays. The left-hand side gable contains a projecting rectangular part under hipped roof, in which the staircase is situated. On both sides rows of two narrow windows and an originally varnished door. This is followed by a round tower with a spire clad in slates, belonging to the chapel which lies behind here, above the principal storey.
This Neo-Romanesque chapel has a cruciform plan with semicircular closed apse. The gabled and lean-to roofs are provided with slates in Maas bond, crosses stand on the ridge ends. The walls of the nave count three round-arched windows and are articulated by pilasters. The masonry of the semicircular windows in the clerestory is flat. The transept is provided with a climbing frieze and a tripartite window in a round-arched niche. The apse is provided with seven round-arched windows and articulated with pilasters. The rear gable of the building is austere. There is an original varnished panelled door. The windows have been given steel frames.
At the chapel a part under flat roof has been built on the principal storey.
The central corridor which cuts through the building lengthwise is provided on the principal storey with wooden wainscoting and varnished wooden Neo-Gothic ornamental mouldings of the doors. In the vestibule before the chapel is a memorial stone with a piece of marble which originates from a Roman catacomb. The text on the memorial stone reads: "In grateful remembrance: In the year of Our Lord 1926, the month of December, the twenty-first day which is dedicated to Saint Thomas, the apostle of India, Petrus Hopmans, the Bishop of Breda, has solemnly consecrated this building."
The broad and high three-aisle Neo-Romanesque cruciform chapel is a whitened space, articulated by pillars and pilasters, the barrel vaults by band ribs. The semicircular windows of the clerestory are filled with Art Deco stained glass. The furnishings have been completely replaced during renovations.
Around the former mission house lies a large walking park. A long drive lined with linden trees leads to the main entrance, at the end of another long avenue planted with beeches is found a Sacred Heart statue from 1930 and to the south of it the cemetery, the oldest grave of which dates from 1927.
Valuation
The mission house is, together with the walking park, of general importance. It is of cultural-historical importance as an example of the development of Catholicism, in particular the foundation of cloisters and mission houses by congregations for the training of their members; it is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the training establishment under German influence. It is of importance for architectural history because of the extremely austere design with a mixture of elements of the typology of the boarding school with elements derived from industrial architecture. It has ensemble value because of the coherence of the components and the embedding in a landscape environment with, among other things, tree-lined avenues. It has been substantially well preserved.
