Omschrijving
Inleiding
PLAQUETTE uit 1899 waarop in medaillon het borstbeeld van generaal-majoor Hendrik Gerard Seelig (1785-1864). De plaquette, een eerbetoon van de kadetten en officieren van de Koninklijke Militaire Akademie van Breda, is oorspronkelijk aangebracht op de voorgevel van dit huis. Na verbouwing van de voorgevel is de plaquette verplaatst naar de zijgevel aan de Mauritsstraat.
Seelig begint in 1803 zijn militaire loopbaan als kadet-volontair bij de 2de compagnie van het 2de batallon Artillerie te Breda. Vanaf 1814 geeft hij lessen krijgskunde bij de Artillerie- en Genieschool te Delft, waar aanvankelijk de opleiding plaatsvond voor Artillerie- en Genieofficieren. Later ook de opleiding voor Infanterie-, Cavalerie- en Marineofficieren. Hier leert hij zijn latere vriend ingenieur J.P. Delprat kennen. Na verplaatsing van de school in 1828 naar Breda wordt hij Eerste Commandant (Gouverneur) van de heropende Koninklijke Militaire Akademie. In 1840 wordt hij hier tot kolonel en in 1845 tot generaal-majoor bevorderd. Delprat volgt hem later op als Eerste Commandant van de Akademie.
Op dezelfde dag, dat deze plaquette werd onthuld, is een tweede identieke plaquette onthuld aan de Delpratsingel 1 met hierop het borstbeeld van generaal-majoor Isaac Paul Delprat (1793-1880).
Omschrijving
De plaquette in reliëf met portret van H.G. Seelig is vervaardigd uit kalksteen. Het medaillon op de plaquette is bekroond door een palmet geflankeerd door een acanthusblad.
Een cartouche onder de plaquette bevat het volgende opschrift: H.G. Seelig. Huldeblyk van Vereerders en Oud-Leerlingen.
Waardering
Het object is van algemeen belang. Introduction
PLAQUETTE from 1899 bearing in a medallion the bust portrait of Major-General Hendrik Gerard Seelig (1785-1864). The plaquette, a tribute from the cadets and officers of the Royal Military Academy of Breda, was originally mounted on the front facade of this house. After renovation of the front facade, the plaquette was relocated to the side facade on the Mauritsstraat.
Seelig began his military career in 1803 as a volunteer cadet with the 2nd company of the 2nd battalion Artillery in Breda. From 1814 he gives lessons in military science at the Artillery and Engineers School in Delft, where initially the training took place for Artillery and Engineer officers. Later also the training for Infantry, Cavalry and Marine officers. Here he meets his later friend engineer J.P. Delprat. After the relocation of the school in 1828 to Breda, he becomes First Commandant (Governor) of the reopened Royal Military Academy.
