Inleiding
Het voormalige dubbel WOONHUIS in Eclectische stijl, staande op nummer 3 en 4, werd, als eerste pand aan de in 1877 aangelegde Singel, in 1877-'78 gebouwd. Het pand heeft de tand des tijds vrijwel ongeschonden doorstaan; wel is de indeling van alle T-schuifvensters van no. 4 gewijzigd.
Omschrijving
De panden hebben een globaal rechthoekige plattegrond, tellen twee bouwlagen en worden gedekt onder een schilddak met verbeterde Hollandse pannen, voorzien van een nieuwe dakkapel. De gevels zijn opgetrokken uit baksteen, terwijl de voorgevel is voorzien van een hardstenen plint, dorpellijsten en cordonlijst en is gepleisterd. Een kroonlijst op consoles sluit de gevel af. Deze gevel telt acht vensterassen en heeft een symmetrische opzet. De pui is voorzien van rustica-stucwerk.
In de derde en zesde vensteras is een paneeldeur met gesneden kalf en bovenlicht geplaatst. Boven de deur, op twee kunststenen consoles, een balkon met smeedijzeren hekwerk. Een openslaande deur met bovenlicht geeft toegang tot de balkons. In alle vensters, zowel op de begane grond als de verdiepingen, zijn eenvoudige T-schuifvensters geplaatst. De indeling van de vensters op no. 4 is vereenvoudigd.
In het interieur onder meer een hal met natuurstenen vloer en lambrizeringen; een gang doorlopend tot de achtergevel; paneeldeuren en stucplafonds.
Waardering
Het woonhuis is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarden: het heeft belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van de typologische ontwikkeling. Het object heeft architectuurhistorische waarden: het is van belang wegens het materiaalgebruik en de detaillering; het is van belang als typerend voorbeeld van de vormgeving van het Bredase woonhuis in de stadsuitleg van de late negentiende eeuw. The former double DWELLING HOUSE in Eclectic style, standing at number 3 and 4, was, as the first building on the Singel laid out in 1877, built in 1877–'78. The building has survived the ravages of time virtually unscathed; however, the arrangement of all T-sash windows of no. 4 has been altered.
Description
The buildings have a roughly rectangular floor plan, comprise two storeys and are covered under a hipped roof with improved Dutch tiles, equipped with a new dormer window. The facades are built of brick, while the front facade is provided with a hard stone plinth, string courses and cordon course and is plastered. A cornice on consoles closes off the facade. This facade has eight window bays and has a symmetrical arrangement. The storefront is provided with rusticated stucco.
In the third and sixth window bay a panelled door with carved details and fanlight has been placed. Above the door, on two artificial stone consoles, a balcony with wrought-iron railwork. A French door with fanlight gives access to the balconies. In all windows, both on the ground floor and the upper storeys, simple T-sash windows have been placed. The arrangement of the windows on no. 4 has been simplified.
In the interior, among other things a hall with natural stone floor and wainscoting; a passage running through to the rear facade; panelled doors and stucco ceilings.
