Omschrijving
Inleiding
Marijnen.
Hiertussen liggen verdiepte gevelvakken.

Description
Introduction
On the corner of the Mauritsstraat and the Mauritssingel stand a pair of DWELLINGS, of which no. 32 dating from c. 1887 is a few years older than no. 34 from 1890. Like no. 32, the corner property no. 34 is probably a design by J.M. Marijnen. Both houses are executed in the style of Eclecticism.
Despite the difference in construction date, which can be traced back to the late decision by the client to also purchase the corner plot, the two properties are executed virtually identically in terms of detailing and style. Only a construction joint reveals the difference in age.
Particularly the corner property, with its pointed corner tower, plays an important role in the nineteenth-century townscape at this location.
Around 1925 a small roof dormer was placed on no. 34. Around 1975 the crown of the tower was blown away. This has, restored to its original form, now been reinstated on the tower. When the balcony of no. 32 was removed is unknown. In all likelihood it was identical to that of no. 34.
Description
The two-storey properties with attic storey have a broadly rectangular floor plan and are covered by a hipped roof with pantiles. The principal architectural element is the quarter-round, slightly recessed corner tower, whose top is provided with an overhanging cornice running all round, crowned with a spire with finial and weathervane.
The façades are constructed in brick and are articulated by an interplay of pilasters, furnished with a stylized block capital, and centre risalits on the one hand, and the moulded plinth, bands, cornice and sill lines and the composite entablature as horizontal elements on the other. Between these lie recessed façade panels. Decorative brickwork in the tower.
The asymmetrical front façade on the Mauritsstraat has seven window bays, of which the two projecting ones are provided with a shallow portico situated beneath the balcony (removed on no. 32), with hardstone step and panel door (renewed no. 34) with fanlight with leaded glass filling. The balcony is set on two consoles, and has a balustrade with artificial stone balusters and moulded drip moulding. At the level of the cornice the risalit is emphasized by the presence in each case of two consoles.
The side façade on the Mauritssingel also has an asymmetrical arrangement and has two window bays. As in the front façade, only cross windows are used here, of which the glazing on the ground floor is somewhat simplified. The mass of the corner tower connects the two façades. Consistent with the quarter-round floor plan of the tower, both the composite cross window on the ground floor and the French doors to the balcony on the upper storey have a segmental floor plan.
The rear façades of the properties are considerably altered. Against no. 32 stands an original two-storey extension under a flat roof, with beside it two original six-light sash windows, while against no. 34 a single-storey extension was realized around 1960. From left to right this property has on the upper storey a six-light sash window, beside which are two windows with renewed glazing and a corresponding French door to the balcony. Against the roof slope stands a set of four roof dormers, of which the two of no. 34 date from around 1920, and the others from c. 1960.
The interior of no. 32 still has the original layout with en-suite rooms, furnished with stucco ceilings, fireplace and panel doors. The hall of no. 34 is heavily altered.
