Inleiding

Introduction

The DWELLING HOUSES no. 24-26 are situated on the eastern side of the Mauritsstraat, included in a street facade with predominantly late nineteenth-century buildings consisting of townhouses. The properties were built in 1886-'88 in Eclectic style. The original building plan provided for the construction of a single dwelling house for Mr. Buurstede from Princenhage. The family purchased the adjacent plot and had the neighbouring house built at the same time, in design mirrored to no. 26, although no. 24 is one bay narrower.

In 1892 the ground floor of the entire object was stuccoed in rustication by C. Wiercx.

Description

The two-storey property has a roof storey and a rectangular ground plan, and is covered by one hipped roof, laid with tiles.

The facades are built in brick. The front facade has a symmetrical arrangement with seven window axes, of which the third and fifth project by half a brick and are provided with a balcony, beneath which the front door is situated.

The front facade is ornamented by the application of stuccowork in the shop front, string course and window surrounds on the upper floor, by the heavy, stuccoed cornice with consoles corresponding to the setbacks in the facade line, and a stone plinth reaching to the window sills.

In the central risalits, beneath the balconies, a panel door is placed in both shallow, stuccoed porches, separated by a worked capital from a simple fanlight. The doors are provided with a cast-iron door grille and circularly cut wooden reliefs and are accessible via a stone step.

All windows are T-sash windows, the arrangement of which has been simplified. The windows on the upper floor are provided with a stuccoed surround with pediment-like broken cornice.

The balconies are placed on ornamented consoles and provided with cast-iron railings.

They have ensemble values: they are important on account of the situation, connected with the expansion of the city; they form part of an intact and for this expansion typical street facade. Integrity/recognisability: they are important in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the urban environment.
