Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
R.C. CHURCH and CHAPEL of the parish H. Petrus Banden in Traditionalist building style from 1937, designed by architect F. Vervest and engineer J. van Buytenen. The architecture of church and chapel is also inspired by the work of architect Kropholler. The associated parsonage lies to the east of the church. The building costs amounted to f 43,771.66. The church consecration took place in 1937 by Mgr. Diepen. From 1888 to 1936 a neo-Gothic church with tower by architect Hendriks from Oss stood on this site. During the construction of the new church, the old tower from 1888 was encased. Furthermore, use was made of the old foundation of the church. After the installation in 1898 of a statue of St. Cornelius in the previous church, the parish of Esbeek becomes a place of pilgrimage. In 1937, the chapel dedicated to St. Cornelius is built simultaneously on the north side of the new church.
The second patron saint of the church is the martyr of Gorkum Adrianus of Hilvarenbeek. In 1572 this priest Adrianus, from Esbeek, fell into the hands of the Gueux and was hanged in Gorkum.
Description.
The church is a three-aisled cruciform basilica with a nave of four bays.
Built into the southwestern part of the central nave is a square bell tower with clockwork and ringing bells. The priest's choir has a three-sided closing. The nave is provided with a gabled roof, the north and south transepts with hipped roofs and the side aisles with leanto roofs. All roofs are covered with natural slate. The tower is crowned by an octagonal needle spire with wrought-iron cross.
The walls, inside and outside, consist of red-purple handmade monastery bricks laid in random bond, with minimal application of natural stone. The pointed arch windows in the side aisles and central nave are coupled in pairs.
The church has an open roof truss structure with a tied collar beam (beam with keystone, wall post and corbel). In the church a sandstone Stations of the Cross and Corpus Christi from 1937 by sculptor Albert Termote from The Hague.
Beside the church the Cornelius chapel with an exterior altar. The chapel has a gabled roof covered with old Dutch tiles.
On the street a boundary wall in the form of a scarp wall with saddle-back top.
Valuation.
The church with chapel is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical significance as a particular expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and the formation of church villages, in particular the establishment and growth of a pilgrimage site. It is also significant as an example of the typological development of the village church and because of its inventory.
It has architectural-historical significance through the style adapted to the rural context and the detailing, and is also significant as an example of the oeuvre of architects Vervest and Van Buytenen. It has ensemble values because of its special situation, connected with the development of the church village. It has been preserved intact.
