Inleiding

Omschrijving

Introduction

JEWISH CEMETERY, located on a rectangular site against the railway line. The oldest grave monuments date from the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The metaheerhuis was built in 1910 in Romanising style.

Description

The site is entirely surrounded by a brick wall with decorative wall stones. These decorative stones are crowned by natural stone elements. A wrought-iron gate provides access to the cemetery.

Scattered around are a number of natural stone gravestones with Hebrew inscriptions and a metaheerhuis.

The single-storey metaheerhuis on a rectangular floor plan is executed in brick and has a risalit with a stepped gable in the middle of both long facades. The facades are provided with a slightly projecting plinth and a brick frieze under the roof edge. The building has a gabled roof; an extension has been placed under a flat roof.

Arched windows have been fitted in the walls; the upper section has recently been closed off with panels.

In the interior the walls are brick up to wainscot height, above which they are plastered. On the boundary between brick and plasterwork a strip in bricorna has been applied.

The metaheerhuis is divided into two rooms. In the largest section the roof structure remains visible, with some wrought-iron tie rods installed in it. In the other section there is a wooden ceiling, supported by a number of beams on corbels.

Assessment

The cemetery is of general interest. The whole has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a social and spiritual development, in particular the development of Jewish burial culture; it is also of importance for the typological development of the cemetery with buildings. It has architectural-historical importance because of the style. It has been preserved intact and is typologically rare.
