The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

Series of three multi-storey FACTORY BUILDINGS, built in 1930, 1929, and 1927 respectively according to designs by engineer A. de Broekert. So-called "industrial boulevard" in functionalist style, which has been directional and determining for complex Strijp I.

Description

Three times an elongated, seven-storey building on a rectangular floor plan under a flat roof. On the street side the buildings are provided on the ground floor with a single-storey extension with undulating roof, curved per bay. At the ends of the buildings projecting building masses have been placed containing lift shafts and staircases.

The buildings are executed in concrete, SAN and SK are plastered, on building SBP shuttering marks are visible.

The facades are largely taken up by broad windows with metal frames and glazing bars. The windows in the staircases are smaller. The interior has been fundamentally altered as a result of changed use.

Valuation

The series of buildings is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as an example of the socio-economic development of industry, in particular the establishment of the Philips factories which are of importance on a national level and as a visualization of the typological development of large-scale high-rise construction for industry. It has innovative value because of the large-scale and technically executed application of reinforced concrete structures. It is architecturally important because of its extremely austere, but impressive design and as an example of the applied combination of building elements; it is also important as an example of the work of architect A. de Broekert. It is also important because of the integrity of its exterior and interior. It is rare because of its concept and construction and as part of an interconnected industrial landscape increasingly rare.
