Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The Constant Rebeque BARRACKS, designed by the Corps of Engineers, under the direction of J. Zwart in 1938. The complex lies in the north-west of Eindhoven and occupies a rectangular site between the Oirschotsedijk and the railway line to Den Bosch.
The earliest building is concentrated on the Oirschotsedijk. A so-called "Boost barracks" was constructed there. The need for new barracks buildings increased when the Conscription Act was amended in 1938. To meet this need a standard type was designed by Captain of the Corps of Engineers A.G. Boost. Characteristic of this type are the gate building and the pavilions, grouped around a parade ground and executed in a businesslike style. Later extensions were realized in the north and far west of the site in the 1940s. These extensions are not protected.
Description
GATE BUILDING, consisting of an elongated wing on an L-shaped floor plan with a taller central risalit. The building is executed in brick under a composite hipped roof; the risalit is provided with a tent roof. Roofs are provided with an overhang and covered with improved Dutch tiles.
The risalit has on the ground floor a broad round-arched passage with iron railwork. Above it are tall narrow windows. On either side of it a clock face and weather vane are visible on the facade.
On the rear side the facade is set back on either side of the risalit; on one side this section was later filled in. In the wings there are composite windows with metal frames on the ground floor and upper floor.
In the right-angled section is located the sports hall. A large part of the upper floor, above the gate, is occupied by the canteen. The original courtyard, in the section to the right of the gate, is now covered over and used as a storeroom.
To the right behind the elongated wing there is a one-storey outbuilding under a gabled roof where the infirmary is situated.
Valuation
The gate building is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical significance as an example of administrative development, namely the establishment of barracks in or near major cities and as an example of the typological development of barracks. From an architectural-historical perspective it is significant because of the carefully detailed stylistic forms applied by the Corps of Engineers offices shortly before the Second World War and because of the use of materials. The building is significant because of its situation, linked to the development of the city. The object is important because of the integrity of its interior and exterior.
