Inleiding

Omschrijving

Introduction

Former Sint Antoniuskerk, known as "steentjeskerk", executed to a design by J.H.H. van Groenendael in Neo-Romanesque style.

Description

Three-aisle basilica church, executed in Kunrader stone, in an irregular pattern. Straight stone blocks are applied as continuous mouldings and relieving arches around the windows. The church has gabled and lean-to roofs, covered with improved Dutch tiles. The gabled roof is fitted with a roof turret with bell.

The choir is terminated by a semicircular apse. On the street side there is a porch against the nave under a lean-to roof with five round arches, all of which are later sealed with glass, and a metal door is installed in the fifth arch. Above them, two saint sculptures are placed in round-arched niches. To the left of the porch is a square tower which tapers towards the top. Against the lower storey of the tower is an apsidal extension placed. This part of the tower is otherwise blank. Above it four storeys are visible. In these are successively a triple round-arched window, a clock face and finally a double round-arched opening and ornamental edge. The tower is crowned by a tent roof with cross. To the right of the porch is a blocky, two-storey baptistry under a tent roof.

The side walls of the aisles and nave are articulated by pilasters with natural stone capitals.

Per bay is a round-arched window with stained glass-in-lead installed (windows made by M. Weiss).

The interior is executed in yellow marl. In the nave there is a coffered ceiling. The aisles are provided with cross vaults.

These vaults are supported on the side of the nave by marble columns with a natural stone base and capital. Round arches are placed between the columns. Against the wall of the aisle are pilasters applied with a marble shaft on natural stone base and with a natural stone capital. These capitals are worked and provided with various symbolic representations.

Above the columns are strips which end in a worked console. The consoles support the beams that span the nave.

Before the choir is a triumphal arch placed. The choir itself is raised, the columns are crowned by capitals with leaf motifs. The apse is fitted with a semicircular dome.
