Inleiding
Voormalig FABRICAGEGEBOUW VOOR OPTISCHE INSTRUMENTEN "Gebouw 217" , onderdeel van het complex Hembrugterrein - Artillerie Inrichtingen Hembrug, in kern daterend uit de periode 1916-1921. In de periode 1936-1941 werd het gebouw aan westzijde met laagbouw uitgebreid. In die periode werd het gebouw herbestemd tot werkplaats voor draaien en frezen. Nadien diende het gebouw nog als museum en als kantoor van de medische dienst en magazijn. Het object behoort tot de bebouwing uit de tweede fase van de fabriek en bevindt zich op het westelijke terreindeel bestemd voor de machinefabriek. Thans is het gebouw buiten gebruik.
Omschrijving
Fabricagegebouw voor optische instrumenten, bestaande uit een traptoren een vlakgedekte blokvormige massa van twee bouwlagen en een massa van één bouwlaag met zaagdak in dwarsrichting, elk gebouwd op rechthoekige plattegrond.
De toren is opgetrokken in grauwe baksteen gemetseld in kruisverband met een toegang op het oosten en een enkel venster bovenin en heeft een dakterras dat is afgezet met een gemetselde borstwering. Het inwendige trappenhuis voert naar de verdieping en het dak van de hoofdbouw ten westen van de toren. Vanaf dit dak is het terras op de toren via een ijzeren trap toegankelijk, waar zich een observatiepost bevindt. Dit betreft een zeldzaam geworden conische plaatijzeren koepel voor één persoon met houten stoel en kijksleuven rondom.De hoofdbouw is opgetrokken in grauwe baksteen gemetseld in kruisverband en bevat in alle gevels grote vensterpartijen met twee, drie of vier gekoppelde houten achtruits schuiframen. De ramen van de verdieping zijn aan drie gevels voorzien van gelijkvormige voorzetramen aan de binnenzijde. De begane grond bestaat uit een tweebeuk met gietijzeren kolommen waarop liggers met I-profiel rusten die de houten vloerbalken van de verdieping dragen.
De westelijke uitbreiding is opgetrokken in anderssoortige baksteen gemetseld in Vlaams verband. De gevels bevatten liggende ijzeren vensters met betonnen dorpels. De hal is een tweebeuk van acht traveeën. De constructie bestaat uit ijzeren vakwerkspanten met gebogen bovenrand en rechte onderrand gedragen door samengestelde kolommen. De buitenmuren hebben geen dragende functie. De zaagkap rust op I-profielen boven het spant met nog een I-profiel als koppelbalk.
Onder het gebouw bevindt zich een betonnen kelder die ontsloten is via een hellende en gebogen afrit van gewapend beton aan de oostzijde.
Waardering
Het voormalige fabricagegebouw voor optische instrumenten "Gebouw 217" is van algemeen belang wegens cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een fabrieksgebouw met toren uit het eerste kwart van de 20ste eeuw met een uitbreiding uit het tweede kwart van die eeuw, en wegens typologische en constructieve waarden door de zeldzame plaatijzeren observatiekoepel en de inwendige ijzerconstructie van het westelijke gebouwdeel. Description
Manufacturing building for optical instruments, consisting of a staircase tower and a flat-roofed block-shaped mass of two storeys and a mass of one storey with sawtooth roof in the transverse direction, each built on a rectangular ground plan.
The tower is built in grey brick laid in English bond with an entrance on the east side and a single window above and has a roof terrace which is enclosed with a brick parapet. The internal staircase leads to the first floor and the roof of the main building west of the tower. From this roof, the terrace on the tower is accessible via an iron staircase, where an observation post is located. This is a now rare conical sheet-iron dome for one person with a wooden chair and viewing slots all around. The main building is built in grey brick laid in English bond and contains large window sections in all facades with two, three or four coupled timber double-hung sash windows. The windows of the first floor are provided on three facades with matching secondary windows on the inside. The ground floor consists of a two-aisle space with cast-iron columns on which rest beams with I-section that support the wooden floor joists of the first floor.
The western extension is built in a different type of brick laid in Flemish bond. The facades contain horizontal iron windows with concrete lintels. The hall is a two-aisle space of eight bays. The structure consists of iron lattice trusses with curved upper chord and straight lower chord supported by composite columns. The external walls have no load-bearing function. The sawtooth roof rests on I-sections above the truss with a further I-section as a tie beam.
Beneath the building is a concrete basement which is accessed via a sloping and curved ramp of reinforced concrete on the east side.
Valuation
The former manufacturing building for optical instruments "Building 217" is of general importance due to cultural and architectural-historical value as an example of a factory building with tower from the first quarter of the 20th century with an extension from the second quarter of that century, and due to typological and constructive values through the rare sheet-iron observation dome and the internal iron structure of the western building section. The object is also important as a historical-functional component of the Hembrugterrein complex, built in the second and third phases of the factory.
