Inleiding
Het WOONHUIS De Romein werd in 1913 gebouwd in Traditionalistische vormentaal met tal van historiserende elementen naar tekeningen van architect C. Roffelsen voor de Deurnese streekhistoricus W.H. Ouwerling. Tussen 1933 en 1938 werd het huis bewoond door Antoon Coolen.
Omschrijving
Het woonhuis heeft een T-vormige plattegrond, telt één bouwlaag en wordt gedekt door een zadeldak met lei in Maasdekking, waarop twee schoorstenen zijn geplaatst. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in baksteen, zijn afgesloten met een tandlijst en worden verlevendigd door de plaatsing van natuurstenen geboorte- en sluitstenen in de strekken van de muuropeningen.
De voorgevel heeft een symmetrische indeling met in het midden een paneeldeur met bewerkt kalf en gedeeld bovenlicht, geflankeerd door aan beide zijden twee kruisvensters. De onderlichten hebben alle een kleine roedeverdeling, terwijl de bovenlichten een glas-in-lood vulling hebben. De luiken van de onderlichten hebben een diabolo-beschildering.
In het interieur is onder meer van belang de oorspronkelijke schouw.
Op de stoep staan, symmetrisch opgesteld en de voordeur flankerend, zes hardstenen, beschilderde stoeppalen. Mogelijk zijn deze ouder dan het woonhuis. In de tuin zijn onder meer van belang twee linden (stamomvang ca. 200 cm).

Het woonhuis is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van de culturele en sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, namelijk als brandpunt van cultureel leven; het is tevens van belang als uitzonderlijk voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van het dorpslandhuis.Het is van architectuurhistorisch belang door de historiserende stijl en detaillering en als voorbeeld van het oeuvre van de architect Roffelsen, die hier, ongetwijfeld in samenspraak met de opdrachtgever, een vroeg voorbeeld van een regionaal geïnspireerde bouwkunst realiseerde. Description
The dwelling house has a T-shaped floor plan, has one storey and is covered by a gabled roof with slate in Maas style laying, on which two chimneys are placed. The facades are built in brickwork, are finished with a dentil cornice and are enlivened by the placement of natural stone foundation and bond stones in the string courses of the wall openings.
The front facade has a symmetrical layout with in the centre a panelled door with worked calf-leather and divided fanlight, flanked on both sides by two cross windows. The lower lights all have small glazing bars, while the upper lights have a stained glass filling. The shutters of the lower lights have a diabolo design.
In the interior the original fireplace is among other things of importance.
On the pavement stand, symmetrically arranged and flanking the front door, six hardstone, painted bollards. These may be older than the dwelling house. In the garden among other things of importance are two lime trees (stem circumference approx. 200 cm).
