Introduction

On the eastern side of the Liesselseweg stands the former DWELLING HOUSE with PRACTICE ROOM and ATELIER, named De Wieger, which now houses the museum of the same name. The dwelling house dates from 1922 and was built to a design by architect C. Roffelsen for the Deurne physician and artist Dr. H. Wiegersma. The house has elements of the Neo-Renaissance style. The former dwelling house can be seen as an early attempt at regional building.

Description

De Wieger has a rectangular floor plan recessed in the building line on the north and south sides and has two storeys. The main building is flanked by outbuildings, which recede in building line and roofline relative to the main building. All roofs have a very steep pitch and are covered with slates in Maas bond. The facades are built in brick.

All side facades are terminated by steep stepped gables, which flank the roofs. The lowest step is built out each time. All steps are covered with a natural stone slab. In the facades above all windows segmental relieving arches are built. The front facade is provided with a large number of wrought iron balcony anchors. The front facade of the main building has a strict symmetrical layout with five window bays. The front door is a panelled door with door light, worked leather and rectangular upper and side lights. Above the door a cross window, with above the relieving arch a sandstone cartouche on which the building year is noted (1922). The central window bay is flanked on the ground floor and first floor by two cross windows each with shuttered lower lights. The lower lights have wooden glazing bars; the upper lights are filled with stained glass panels. In the northern outbuilding a cross window and a half window are placed; in the southern outbuilding only a cross window.

Against the rear facade is a balcony with built-in balustrade. On the outer wall of the dwelling house at the balcony is a bold wall painting depicting St. Christopher. The painting is probably by H. Wiegersma.
