Inleiding
Het naast het gemeentehuis, aan de zuidelijke zijde van de Markt gelegen voormalige POSTKANTOOR met DIRECTEURSWONING, met elementen van de Art Nouveau dateert uit 1908 en werd gerealiseerd naar een ontwerp van de Deurnese architect Joh. Rooijakkers. In eerste instantie had het kantoor de status van post- en telegraafkantoor. Na 1934 is het een hulpkantoor. Het gebouw heeft tot 1969 als postkantoor gefunctioneerd. Sedert dat jaar is het onderdeel van het gemeentehuis. In 1983-1985 werd, ten behoeve van de aansluiting op de nieuwbouw, de achtergevel deels uitgebroken, deels ingebouwd. Op de begane grond is de kantine van het gemeentehuis ondergebracht.
Omschrijving
Het tweelaags gebouw heeft een globaal rechthoekige plattegrond en wordt gedekt door een samengesteld schilddak met geglazuurde kruispannen. Het gebouw is opgetrokken in machinale baksteen en is rijkelijk versierd met gele en groene geglazuurde baksteen (banden, fries, mozaïeken) en hardsteen (dorpels, lateien, plint). De voorgevel heeft een asymmetrische opzet. Rechts van het midden bevindt zich een eensteens risalerende ingangspartij met hardstenen balkon, waaronder een vleugel-paneeldeur met driedelig bovenlicht, voorzien van smeedijzeren roosters. De zuidoostelijke hoek is afgeschuind en op de begane grond voorzien van een forse hardstenen dubbele brievenbus, waarboven een grotendeels in hardsteen uitgevoerde erker, bekroond door een balkon en topgevel. In alle gevels zijn eenvoudige schuifvensters met driedelig bovenlicht geplaatst. Tegen de westelijke zijgevel voerde een houten trap naar de voormalige directeurswoning op de etage.
De indeling van het interieur is op de begane grond gewijzigd.
Waardering
Het voormalige postkantoor is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van de geografische en sociaal-economische ontwikkeling van het Peelgebied, het is tevens van belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van het postkantoor. Introduction
Next to the town hall, on the southern side of the Markt, stands the former POST OFFICE with DIRECTOR'S RESIDENCE, featuring Art Nouveau elements, dating from 1908 and realised according to a design by Deurne architect Joh. Rooijakkers. Initially, the office had the status of post and telegraph office. After 1934 it became a sub-post office. The building functioned as a post office until 1969. Since that year it has been part of the town hall. In 1983-1985, to facilitate connection to the new construction, part of the rear façade was removed and part incorporated. On the ground floor the town hall canteen is housed.
Description
The two-storey building has a roughly rectangular floor plan and is covered by a composite hipped roof with glazed roof tiles. The building is constructed in machine-made brick and is lavishly decorated with yellow and green glazed brick (bands, friezes, mosaics) and stone (sills, lintels, plinths). The front façade has an asymmetrical layout. To the right of centre is a one-brick-deep projecting entrance section with stone balcony, beneath which a wing-panel door with three-part fanlight, fitted with wrought-iron grilles. The south-eastern corner is bevelled and on the ground floor fitted with a substantial stone double letterbox, above which a bay largely executed in stone, crowned by a balcony and gable. Simple sash windows with three-part fanlights are placed in all façades. Against the western side façade a wooden staircase led to the former director's residence on the upper floor.
The interior layout on the ground floor has been altered.
Valuation
The former post office is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of the geographical and socio-economic development of the Peel region; it is also of importance for the typological development of the post office.
