Omschrijving
Inleiding
Klijnstra, H.A.

Description
Introduction
An elongated RESIDENTIAL BLOCK with six dwellings and two residential/commercial premises, located on the east side of the Van Ostadeplein, forms through its two gateways the entrance to the rear Paulus Potterstraat and Jan Steenstraat, which together with dwellings on the Van Woustraat and Vermeerstraat form part of the fifth group of a housing complex designed by the municipality. The gateway building 'block number 1' forms the heart of this complex through its central location. The block was built in 1919 according to designs by architects W.K. de Wijs, M.J. Klijnstra, H.A. Pothoven and G. van Hoogevest. The detailed brickwork architecture displays a craftsman-like traditional building method.
Around 1980 the dwellings were renovated, during which elements such as door and window sections with glazing bars and kitchens were replaced.
Description
The residential block is located on the eastern edge of a rectangular square. The block has one storey with a composite roof section, covered with red Dutch tiles. The elongated symmetrical form is angled in two places. The central section with a higher gabled roof consists of four dwellings. To the left and right, positioned at a slight angle relative to the central section, are two gateways which provide access to the rear streets. A lower gabled roof, with gables above the gateways, connects the central section with the two end sections, each consisting of two dwellings. These end blocks consist of one storey with a gabled roof, perpendicular to the central section and parallel to the Paulus Potterstraat and Jan Steenstraat.
The symmetrical front facade (west side) consists of the main mass with four dwellings and a projecting tall slightly curved gable. Adjacent to this are the recessed gateways with gables above them behind which are the bedrooms of Van Ostadeplein 1 and 4, and finally the projecting end dwellings.
The front elevation shows the (side) gables of these dwellings. The broad and angled gable of the main mass is placed on five arches, of which the middle three arches have the largest span. The compressed brick columns on which the arches are placed are provided with variations in brickwork consisting of a base, shaft and capital. Behind the middle arch are two doors, under the second and fourth arch large shop windows and under the outer arches a door with a narrow window next to it. At the height of the second storey in the gable is a strip window consisting of six windows. The top of the gable is provided with a brick relief.
The gable is flanked by wings one storey high with tall gabled roof. In the walls are two windows and the entrances to dwellings Van Ostadeplein 1 and 4. The gateway entrances consist of one large arch flanked by two small round arches. Above the large arch is a gable, provided with two narrow windows and brick ornamentation at the top. The barrel vaults above the gateway are laid with yellow machine-made brickwork.
The west facades of the dwellings on the Paulus Potterstraat and Jan Steenstraat are austere and provided with one window on the first storey and two windows on the second storey.
The symmetrical rear facade has the same main layout as the front facade. Here the wings curve backwards. In front of the main mass are four gardens. At various dwellings one storey high sheds have been added, which fall outside the protection.
In the gable are four six-light windows with a small two-light window entirely at the top. Geometric patterns enliven the brick facade. Four roof dormers, two on each side of the gable, consist of two opening six-light windows with a flat roof. The facades of the wings are identical to those of the front facade.
The left side facade is formed by the rear sides of the two dwellings on the Paulus Potterstraat. The structure consists of one storey with gabled roof. The first storey has been altered by the addition of sheds. In the middle is a chimney, flanked by roof dormers. On the ridge corners are two small chimneys.
The right side facade is essentially identical to the left side facade. Here too sheds have been added later.
The interior of a total of eight dwellings and two commercial premises is austere. At some dwellings the original octagonal tiled floors are still present.
The layout of the ground floor of the premises at Van Ostadeplein 2 and 3 consist of a square tall commercial space with large, semi-circular windows, with the staircase next to it.
Valuation
The residential block on the Van Ostadeplein is of general importance because of its architectural-historical and cultural-historical value as a well-preserved example of social, municipal housing, executed in brickwork architecture using craftsman-like traditional building methods. Through its central location at the end of a sight axis from the square and through the presence of gateways, the block has urban planning value as the most important block within a neighbourhood of workers' dwellings.
