Omschrijving
Object-omschrijving

Description
Object description
The barracks building 'Adolf' situated on the northeastern side of the former exercise ground was realized in 1891 as the third of four battalion barracks. The building is now separated from the forecourt by small gardens, bounded by a hedge. The layout and arrangement is mirrored identically to that of the Willemkazerne.
The building has a rectangular floor plan with a length of approximately 150 meters. Two storeys are enclosed by a gabled roof of blue tiles. This roof, with the ridge perpendicular to the Leusderweg, is interrupted at five locations by three large and two small roof dormers, which connect to stepped gables. The chimneys, placed at regular intervals on the ridge, date from 1985.
The virtually symmetrical front facade (southwestern side), consisting of a cornice-topped facade of 49 bays, is articulated by five risalits.
The horizontal composition of the front facade consists of a plinth, a continuous string course between the first and second storey and a string course interrupted by the stepped gables between the second storey and the mortared roof line. This line is richly decorated with rectangular fields, into which brick ornamentation has been incorporated. Natural stone elements have also been placed within these, among others in the form of diamond-shaped stones. The horizontal elements in the facade are interrupted by five groups of four pilasters, which mark the risalits. The pilasters are provided with relief at the height of the first storey through setbacks created in the brickwork. At the height of the second storey, the pilasters are accentuated by yellow brick blocks. The pilasters are crowned by rectangular yellow blocks with a red brick recess. These pseudo-watchtowers are finally terminated by a natural stone saddle ridge with a wrought iron stylized floral ornament on top.
Besides this rich detailing, the appearance of the barracks building is also determined by the rhythm of the windows. The most common window type is a sash window, coupled or not, with a four-by-four glazing bar division in the lower sash and a two-by-two glazing bar division in the fanlight. On the ground floor the windows are spanned by a segmental arch, on the second storey by a straight line. Natural stone corner and closing stones interrupt the red brick arches. The windows have natural stone sills. In the slightly projecting stepped gables there are windows of differing size and shape.
The stepped gables are located at the height of the 3rd through 5th bay, the 16th bay, the 25th through 27th bay, the 36th bay and finally the 45th through 47th bay. The five stepped gables are richly decorated. The central stepped gable includes a double door with a natural stone balcony above it. Double casement doors with glazing bars provide access to this balcony. The doors are framed by pilasters with an entablature, on which 'Adolfkazerne' is inscribed in black letters. On the entablature is placed a curved pediment, flanked by obelisks in half relief. In the spandrel beneath the semicircular pediment a cartouche with the letter W is executed in half relief, which refers to King William III. Directly above the pediment there is a cartouche with the date 1889. A climbing arch frieze consisting of differently colored bricks ends directly above the date in a broad bracket, which is crowned by a wrought iron floral ornament. The two stepped gables of the corner risalits are more simply decorated. In the stepped gable there is a round window, decorated all around by a brick roll molding, interrupted at four points by natural stone. A climbing frieze, consisting of light red bricks with yellow brick decorations placed upon it, supports the natural stone coping of the stepped gable. The facade is crowned by a small natural stone pediment, with a small floral ornament upon it.
The two remaining stepped gables are one bay wide and have the form of a spout gable. In this bay double doors are installed on the ground floor and double casement doors behind a balcony railing on the first floor. The two pilasters framing this bay transition into a semicircular arch in the spout gable. In the spandrel a semicircular arch window is installed. The top of the gable has a bracket, above which a natural stone curved pediment is placed.
The left side facade, bounded by corner pilasters, is symmetrical and consists of two storeys with a stepped gable. The two windows in each storey are positioned relatively far toward the outside. At the transition from the second storey to the stepped gable there is in the center a natural stone springing of a chimney, which slightly projects. Yellow brick blocks mark this plane. The chimney is crowned by a natural stone curved pediment. A climbing frieze, consisting of light red brick with yellow brick decorative elements applied upon it, supports the natural stone coping of the stepped gable. Natural stone corbels form the transition from the frieze to the chimney.
The symmetrical right side facade is virtually identical to the left side facade with the exception of the flue, which is here applied over the entire height of the facade and is decorated in the same manner as the corner pilasters. Also different is the climbing frieze, which here has only two yellow instead of four decorative elements.
The rear facade was completely modified in 1985 as a result of the conversion to 27 apartments, whereby it is considered of secondary importance.
The interior was likewise substantially modified during the 1985 renovation and is likewise of secondary importance.
Valuation
The barracks building 'Adolf' is of general importance because of its architectural-historical value as an intact component of an infantry barracks, executed in a richly detailed, eclectic architectural style. The building has great ensemble value in relation to the other components of the former Juliana van Stolbergkazerne. The building is also of cultural-historical value as a remnant of an important development within the Dutch armed forces.
