Inleiding

Introduction

Double TOWNHOUSE, situated in a row of adjoining residential buildings on a dead-end and sloping road running parallel to the Stadsring. The properties are positioned with the ridge parallel to the road, with the front facades offering views onto a 19th-century public garden.

Originally the landscape situation was further emphasized by the presence of the Beek. In the nineteen fifties the Beek was filled in during the construction of the Stadsring.

Typological and stylistic similarities with Museum Flehite make it plausible that H. Kroes was involved in the design of this double townhouse. Research indicates that the building was constructed in the first decade of the twentieth century.

For both the building type, a transverse house with stepped gable on the street side, and the applied style, neo-Dutch renaissance, the architect used seventeenth-century examples as a source of inspiration. Characteristic of this style are amongst others the stepped gable, the shuttered windows with leaded light fanlights and the imitation bands.

The rear facade is of secondary importance, as it has been modified several times.

Description

The double townhouse, built on a rectangular floor plan, consists of a basement, two storeys and a gabled roof enclosed between stepped gables. Within this is incorporated a sloping gable roof of the stepped gable on the front facade. The ground floor, which is elevated relative to the public road, is reached by means of a sandstone staircase in front of the property. The roof is covered with red Dutch tiles. The roof cornice is supported on brackets. On the roof there are two roof dormers clad in slate and crowned by lead finials.

The symmetrical front facade consists of six bays, of which the middle two form a central projection with a tall stepped gable. The front facade is divided horizontally by an alternation of profiled mouldings, plastered bands and blocks. Drip mouldings are located at the ground floor, first storey and below the two small windows in the stepped gable. Cordon mouldings are applied at the level of the top sill of the windows on the first storey and five cordon mouldings to articulate the stepped gable, also marking the five steps. Continuous bands are located at the level of the middle of the windows on both the ground floor and the first storey, as well as at the top of the windows on the ground floor. Blocks, at corners and beside windows, are placed just above the drip mouldings, halfway up the height of the windows and fanlight, as well as in the stepped gable just above and between the cordon mouldings. In the central projection there are two entrances on the ground floor. The double internal entrances are framed by fluted pilasters with modillions, which carry a cornice, with above them two segmental arched fields, surrounded by white blocks with plastered scallop motifs in the arched fields. The doors with leaded light fanlights are decorated with renaissance details and metalwork for double segmental arch windows. The entrances are flanked on both sides by two windows with divided leaded light fanlights. These windows are closed below the same aforementioned arched field. Wooden shutters, with a red-white hourglass motif with green surround, flank the windows. Seven ornamental wall anchors are located between and beside the arches.

On the first storey the windows are crowned by a flat arch with plastered blocks. In the central projection two windows with undivided fanlights are installed, which are terminated by flat arches with plastered blocks. Above these, in the transition to the stepped gable, two small rectangular windows are positioned. In the stair above this a spandrel with segmental arch is inserted. A plastered base with scrolls forms the start of a small, masonry pilaster topped with a natural stone obelisk. In the stepped gable there are various wall anchors.

The rear facade has been substantially modified several times. Windows have been replaced or newly installed, and an extension has been added.

The two townhouses have been combined internally, with the right door becoming disused. The interior of Stadsring 48 has been completely altered, Stadsring 50 by contrast still possesses a number of interior elements worthy of protection. The staircase is authentic, and consists of a wooden handrail with balusters, continuing up to the second storey. On the first storey in the middle of the ceilings there are plasterwork decorations, in which scallop motifs are incorporated.

Evaluation

The double property is of general importance by virtue of its architectural-historical value as a good example of a townhouse designed in neorenaissance style. It possesses high aesthetic qualities through the care with which rich detailing and various materials have been applied. Furthermore, the property has ensemble value, in relation to the public garden and as a valuable component of the closed building line along it. The property forms part of the oeuvre of the city architect H. Kroes.
