Inleiding
Dudok herkenbaar is.

Description
Introduction
SCHOOL BUILDING ('Rembrandtschool') of the now former primary school, located between Bisschopsweg, Rubensstraat and Vermeerstraat. The school is known as the Blue School on account of its distinctive blue-painted windows. In front of the school building is a schoolyard, partly surrounded by brick walls. Through the broad chimney stack built high in brick and through its location in the sight lines of roads leading to the school, the building forms an urban planning landmark in the neighbourhood.
City architect Ir. C.B. van der Tak designed this building in 1931 on commission from the Municipality of Amersfoort as a primary school for girls.
The building is characterized by plastic massing, inspired by W.M. Dudok's fourth phase (compare school Zwaluwplein Hilversum, 1926). The material use as well, such as the yellow brick with deep joints, the blue steel windows, the narrow vertical windows, the horizontal strip windows and the projecting white roof cornices, show the influence of Dudok's architecture (compare school Zwaluwplein in Hilversum, 1926) on this design.
Since 1989 an educational function has again been accommodated in the building, with velux windows installed in the roof slopes. On the rear side of the school building there is a separate elongated low canopy for bicycles. In the interior, the spatial quality of the corridors is particularly significant.
Description
The primary school is built on an L-shaped plan, with both wings situated either side of a tall chimney stack. The wings on a brick plinth have one to two storeys, which are concluded by tall hipped roofs. The school building is characterized by plastic massing.
The front facade (north side) situated to the right of the chimney possesses a broad principal mass. In front of this is a two-storey high, shallow volume, with flat roof, and in front of that again a one-storey high volume, also with flat roof. On the right the far-projecting hipped roof extends down to the level of one storey, under which the recessed entrance section is situated. The ground floor has square windows with glazing bars, while the corridor on the first floor is lit by narrow vertical windows.
Against the right facade of this principal mass a risalit is placed, equipped with a hipped roof, which is joined to the principal roof with a lower ridge. The ground floor has a strip window, while three windows are placed below the roof line.
The rear of the two-storey principal mass is symmetrical in composition. The two-storey high central section is flanked on both sides by the roof extending down to the first storey. On this side the classrooms are situated, with large windows with horizontal divisions. At the far left and far right are narrow strips for toilets, with a three-part window in the lower half.
The left facade of the principal volume is asymmetrical in arrangement. To the right of centre is a vertical volume. To the left of this are five vertical windows on the ground floor. Above this is a broad roof dormer with strip window placed against the vertical volume. To the right of this volume is an entrance section located at the corner, accessible via three steps.
To the left of the tower volume at the schoolyard is the second wing, which housed the gymnasium. In the facade facing the yard are low windows placed below the roof line. The left side facade of this wing has a broad door and window section on the ground floor, flanked by flower boxes, between which a number of steps are placed. The rear facade of the gymnasium contains low windows below the roof line with a vertical window in the wall surface on the left.
The tower volume at the schoolyard, in which the chimney stack is accommodated, is virtually closed and has on the east side five narrow, vertically stacked small canopies.
In the interior, the spatial structure of the corridors, both on the ground floor and on the first floor, is particularly significant. The columns, some provided with wall piers, are determining in this regard. The central staircase is also significant.
Valuation
The former primary school for girls is of general importance on account of its architectural historical value as an example of a building type, as well as an example of a building style in which the influence of W.M. Dudok is recognizable. Within the oeuvre of architect ir. C.B. van der Tak the building occupies a special place. The school is of urban planning value through its careful siting and through the tall chimney stack within the neighbourhood.
