Omschrijving

Description

The LAYOUT. The estate Schothorst is bounded on the west side by the road which runs from the junction of the Schothorsterlaan towards the allotments. The northern boundary is determined by the allotments. The eastern boundary runs to the east of the Environmental Education Centre and parallel to its east elevation.

In 1876, the owner of the estate Schothorst, mr. Pieter Verloren van Themaat, commissioned the (garden) architect S.A. van Lunteren to redesign the estate, whereby components of the rectilinear layout in the LANDSCAPE PARK were retained.

The layout designed by S.A. van Lunteren is still largely recognisable. The position of open fields, groups of trees, the course of paths and lanes and the ground modelling are still present. However, when the estate was redesigned as a municipal park in the nineteen-eighties, new elements were introduced into the garden, particularly in a narrow strip to the south of the orangery and to the north of the coach house. These elements, including a flower and insect garden and terrariums for reptiles, fall outside the protection. Furthermore, the construction of car parks, additional paths and a slightly modified line have affected Van Lunteren's composition.

Description

The garden architect S.A. van Lunteren projected a landscape system of lanes, grasslands, groups of trees and water features over the original rectilinear layout. This layout, designed in English landscape style, placed the white country house as a prominent element in the greenery and made the country house reflect in the water features surrounding it. The Schothorsterlaan, running straight towards the country house from the Hamseweg, splits approximately one hundred and fifty metres to the west of the country house in a northerly and easterly direction. A meadow, bordered by groups of trees and a small pond, lies between the junction and the country house. The meadow, which provides space for an important visual axis, has an irregular shape in contrast to the surrounding rectangular subdivision. The eastern branch of the Schothorsterlaan forms the southern boundary of the park. From this road a path runs in a northerly direction towards the almost circular site where the country house and coach house are located. The site is bordered by tall and low groups of trees. The coach house is somewhat hidden from view by the trees placed between the country house and the coach house. The site is crossed by a ditch, which is connected to the slightly larger water feature at the Schothorsterlaan, in an easterly direction.

Valuation

The park layout of the country seat Schothorst is of general importance because of its architectural and cultural historical value as a reasonably intact example of a landscape garden style. Furthermore, it is of importance as part of the oeuvre of architect S.A. van Lunteren. The garden layout is of ensemble value in conjunction with the country house, the coach house and the orangery.
