The register's description

Inleiding:

Introduction:

The casemate was built in 1939-1940 as part of the reinforcement of the Vallei Position and is located on the Werk aan de Glashut. It is one of a total of three casemates from this period that still remain on this work.

Description:

A DEFENSIVE WORK constructed in 1939-1940, consisting of a concrete machine-gun casemate of type S3. The casemate was built as part of the reinforcement of the Vallei Position and is located in the front of the main rampart of the Werk aan de Glashut.

This is a light casemate of type S3, or Stekelvarken 3 as it was named on account of the iron pins on the outside to which camouflage material could be attached and the three firing ports. The casemate was intended for one heavy machine gun for the purpose of frontal and flanking fire. The three firing ports together had a field of fire of 110 degrees. The two unused firing ports could if desired be closed with a steel hatch of 2 cm. There were no provisions for observation. The casemate has a rectangular floor plan with a straight front and rear side. The dimensions are: rear side 5.20 metres, side sides straight 1 metre, side sides sloped 2 metres and front side 2.50 metres. Height including floor slab is 3 metres. The casemate consists solely of a combat chamber with a rear exit, three rifle firing ports and has walls of 80 cm reinforced concrete. Bevels have been made around the perimeter of the roof to effect the deflection of grenades.

Valuation:

The casemate is of general interest on account of:

Cultural-historical value through its commemorative value on account of its role during the combat operations in 1939-1940.

Architectural-historical value in particular as an expression of military-strategic building design, which was based on the outpost function during the mobilization and war operations 1939-1940.

Ensemble value on account of the functional-spatial relationship to the other components of the Grebbelinie, as this developed in phases during the period between 1744 and 1944.
