Omschrijving

Description

The COUNTRY HOUSE is situated in a landscape park designed by garden architect S.A. van Lunteren. The immediate surroundings of the country house, designed in neoclassical style, are formed by lawns, which in turn are bounded by groups of trees. The view in a westerly direction towards the Schothorsterlaan is open, while on the east side there is a small, almost circular lawn, where the entrance to the country house is located. S.A. van Lunteren presumably also designed the renovation of the country house. This involved the modification of the existing building and the new construction of a front section, in which considerable space was provided for a prominent staircase and some representative rooms to the left and right of it. The building has scarcely changed since then. The floor plan of the two-storey main mass of the country house is almost rectangular. The front section is somewhat wider than the rear section. In the left side elevation, the transition from front to rear section is marked by a narrow recessed intermediate element. The country house has plastered facades and has a horizontal articulation by means of a natural stone plinth, natural stone drip mouldings, cordon mouldings and the cornice. T-windows of a rectangular shape and in the rear elevation provided with a mirror moulding divide the facades into bays. In the front and rear elevations there are corner pilasters, which are rusticated on the ground floor and provided with casements on the first storey.

The roof section consists of hipped roofs with slate covering in Maas bond. In the roof panels of both side elevations there are two roof dormers, which are part of the cornice.

In the symmetrical front elevation (east side) of the main mass, three window axes are alternated by narrow blind windows, whereby the volumes with a window axis project slightly, marked by a decorated closed parapet above the roof line. The main entrance is located on the central axis, marked by the portico placed in front of the first storey. This structural mass is supported by rusticated corner pilasters and Corinthian columns and carries a balcony. This balcony is provided with a baluster parapet with ornamental vases on the corners. Double French doors with a segmental fanlight give access to the balcony. Narrow blind windows flank this entrance. Pilasters with panels border the central axis. These pilasters extend above the cornice into pylons, which break through the parapet. In the middle of this parapet there is a projection, which is concluded by a curving arch with a decorated keystone in the middle.

The symmetrical rear elevation of the main mass with features corresponding to the front elevation, consists of seven window axes, bordered by corner pilasters, which are rusticated on the first storey and provided with panels on the second storey. The second, fourth and sixth window axes project slightly. In the relatively narrow second and sixth axes there are sash windows with fanlight under a mirror arch, while the remaining bays have T-windows. In front of the central projection and the two adjoining axes a three-sided veranda has been placed, whose roof is supported by four iron columns. The decorated consoles with geometric meander motifs support the decorated beams. In the central axis is the rear entrance framed by pilasters. Above it, on the second storey, are double French doors, which provide access to a small balcony. The central projection is crowned by a curved pediment, above which the parapet with curving arch and decorated keystone projects as described in the front elevation.

The left side elevation (south side) consists of the side elevation of the rear section, consisting of seven window axes, and the side elevation of the front section, which has three window axes. These elevations are separated from each other by a narrow intermediate element. The side elevation is more simply designed than the front and rear elevations. A low plinth and the cornice with parapet form the only horizontal articulation. The elevation is entirely bordered on the left by a corner pilaster.

The right side elevation (north side), like the left side elevation, can be divided into a front and rear section and has similar detailing. The separation is marked by the slight projection of the front section. On the first storey of this front section there are three windows, on the second storey only two windows.

On the right part of the rear section there is a rectangular extension, provided with a single door and flanked by arched spandrels. This extension dates from before 1876.

In the left part of the side elevation of the rear section there are two window bays with windows on the first and second storeys.

The interior of the country house is still largely intact. Within the original structure, the two staircases, several representative rooms, provided with original wainscoting and stuccoed ceilings, form the principal elements.

Valuation

The country house Schothorst is of general importance because of its architectural historical value as an intact example of a country house designed with the stylistic characteristics of neoclassicism. The country house also has great value as the focal point of an ensemble which includes a landscape park, a coach house and an orangery. In addition, the country house has cultural historical value as the successor to earlier buildings.
