Omschrijving
Object-omschrijving
Waardering

Description
Object description
The LODEWIJK BARRACKS BUILDING, situated on the west side of the former parade ground in a southern location, was realised in 1890 as the second of four battalion barracks. The building is now separated from the forecourt by small gardens, bounded by a hedge. The layout and arrangement are identical to those of the Hendrikkazerne.
The building has a rectangular floor plan with a length of approximately 135 metres. Two storeys are enclosed by a gabled roof of blue tiles. This roof, with the ridge parallel to the Leusderweg, is interrupted at five places by three large and two small gable-end additions, which connect to the stepped gables. The chimneys, which are placed at regular intervals along the ridge, date from 1985.
The entirely symmetrical front facade (south-east facade), consisting of a cornice-topped facade of 47 bays, is articulated by five risalits.
The horizontal composition of the front facade consists of a plinth, a continuous string course between the first and second storey and a string course interrupted by the stepped gables between the second storey and the brick cornice. This moulding is richly decorated with rectangular fields, in which brick ornamentation has been applied. Ashlar elements have also been placed therein, among other things in the form of diamond points.
The horizontal elements in the facade are interrupted by five times four pilasters, which mark the risalits. The pilasters are provided with relief at the height of the first storey through offsets applied in the brickwork. At the height of the second storey, the pilasters are accentuated by yellow brick blocks. The pilasters are crowned by rectangular yellow blocks with a red brick recess. These pseudo-watchtowers are finally terminated by a small ashlar saddle-back.
Besides this rich detailing, the appearance of the barracks building is also determined by the rhythm of the windows. The most common window type is a sash window, coupled or not, with a four-by-four glazing bars in the lower frame and a two-by-two glazing bars in the fanlight. On the ground floor the windows are spanned by a segmental arch, on the second storey by a straight lintel. Ashlar bed and end stones interrupt the red brick arches. The windows have ashlar sub-sills. In the slightly projecting stepped gables are windows of differing size and form.
The stepped gables are located at the height of the 2nd to 4th bay, the 15th bay, the 24th to 26th bay, the 35th bay and finally the 44th to 46th bay. The five stepped gables are richly decorated.
The central stepped gable comprises a double door with above it an ashlar balcony. Double French doors with glazing bars provide access to this balcony. The doors are framed by pilasters with a capital, on which in black letters 'Lodewijkkazerne' is written. On the capital is placed a curved pediment, flanked by obelisks in half-relief. In the spandrel under the semicircular pediment is a cartouche with the letter W in half-relief, which refers to King William III. Directly above the pediment is a cartouche with the date 1890. A climbing arch frieze consisting of differently coloured bricks ends directly above the date in a broad makelaar, which is crowned by a wrought-iron floral ornament.
The two stepped gables of the corner risalits are more simply decorated. In the stepped gable is a round window, surrounded by a brick moulding, interrupted at four points by ashlar. A climbing frieze, consisting of light red bricks with yellow brick decorations applied on top, supports the ashlar coping of the stepped gable. The facade is crowned by a makelaar, with a wrought-iron floral ornament on top.
The two remaining stepped gables are one bay wide and have the form of a spout gable. In this bay double doors are fitted on the ground floor and on the first storey double French doors behind a balcony rail. The two pilasters, which frame this bay, pass over into a semi-circular arch in the stepped gable. In the spandrel is a semi-circular arched window. The top of the gable has a makelaar, above which is placed an ashlar curved pediment.
The left side facade, bounded by corner pilasters, is symmetrical and consists of two storeys with a stepped gable. The two windows in each storey are placed relatively far towards the outside. On the transition from the second storey to the stepped gable is in the centre an ashlar base of a chimney, which projects slightly. Yellow brick blocks mark this plane. The chimney is crowned by an ashlar curved pediment. A climbing frieze, consisting of light red brick with yellow brick decorative elements applied on top, supports the ashlar coping of the stepped gable. Ashlar claw stones form the transition from the frieze to the chimney.
The symmetrical right side facade is almost identical to the left side facade with the exception of the smoke channel, which is here applied over the full height of the facade and is decorated in the same manner as the corner pilasters. Also different is the climbing frieze, which here has only two yellow instead of four decorative elements.
The rear facade was completely altered in 1985 as a result of the conversion into 29 single-family dwellings, due to which it is of subordinate importance.
The interior was also significantly altered during the 1985 conversion and is of subordinate importance.
Valuation
The barracks building 'Lodewijk' is of general importance due to its architectural-historical value as an intact component of an infantry barracks, executed in a richly detailed, eclectic architectural style. The building has great ensemble value in relation to the other components of the former Juliana van Stolbergkazerne. The building is also of cultural-historical value as a remnant of an important development within the Dutch armed forces.
